FORT FAIRFIELD – Ira L. Sherwood, 84, died unexpectedly Thursday, Oct. 19, 2006, at a Presque Isle health care facility. He was born Nov. 28, 1921, in Poodiac, New Brunswick, the son of Rollo Paxton and Margaret (McCreary) Sherwood. Ira graduated from Coney High School, Augusta, in 1940, attended Northeastern University, and went on to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps, during World War II, in the 1st Marine Division 3rd Regiment and served in the Pacific including Guadalcanal. He was married to B. Annette Bourassa June 6, 1946. He was a member of the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Fort Fairfield; the VFW Paul Lockhart Post No. 6187; and the American Legion Walter Lovely Post No. 27, Fort Fairfield. Ira had been employed as a criminal investigator in New York, a United States border patrolman in the southwestern United States, and as a United States immigration officer in Fort Fairfield. In addition to his parents, Mr. Sherwood was predeceased by his wife, Annette Jan. 28, 2004; and 11 siblings. He is survived by three sons, Robert and Daryll Sherwood, both of Fort Fairfield and Samuel Sherwood and his wife, Deborah, of Martinsburg, W.Va.; one daughter, Diane Sherwood of Fort Fairfield; one brother, Patrick Sherwood of Cherryville, N.J.; seven grandchildren, four great-grand-children, numerous nieces and nephews. A private service of committal will be conducted at the Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta, at a later date. Those who wish may contribute in memory of Ira to the charity or organization of one’s choice. Arrangements are in the care of Dorsey Funeral Home, Fort Fairfield.
