MACHIAS – Olevia M. Clemons, 95, formerly of Kennebec Road died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2006, with her loving family by her side. She was born May 15, 1911, in Machias, the daughter of the late Sanford and Frances (Roberts) McKeown. She attended local schools. On June 29, 1939, she married David R. “Pat” Clemons in Machias where they raised their family. In her early years Lee worked as a waitress at the Indian Lake Inn in Whiting and Mallar’s Restaurant in Machias. She spent most of her working life in retail at Leighton’s Clothing Store in Machias, Machias Clothing, McKenney Jewelry in Machias, and then for Eddie Foss Clothing Store until it closed. She worked as a court officer for more than 15 years, during the time her husband served as sheriff of Washington County. Lee oversaw the daily operations of the jail kitchen and inmate staff. After her retirement from the sheriff’s office, Lee enjoyed frequent trips to Ellsworth and Bangor always stopping in Ellsworth to visit with her sister, Alice. She took yearly trips to Jordan Pond with her sisters for popovers and tea, morning coffee with the girls, suppers at the Jacksonville Grange. Lee was an excellent cook especially when it came to donuts and her famous peanut butter cupcakes. She loved to knit and crotchet, making hundreds of afghans, mittens, hats, socks, gloves, sweaters and dog coats, donating most of the items to the nursing home or church fairs. Nana’s greatest enjoyment, however, was spent surrounded by her family, especially her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and their many friends. She was a member of the Machias Grange, the Machias Women’s Bowling League and a longtime member of the Centre Street Congregational Church. She was predeceased by her husband Aug. 23, 1990; two sisters, Florence Johnson and Alice Jordan; and a brother, Sanford McKeown Jr. Family members include two sons, Donald A. and his wife, Helen L. Hatt, of Machias, Dale F. and his wife, Jean M. Clemons, of Machias; four grandchildren, Sandy A. and his wife, Kim Hatt, of Holden, Danny R. Hatt and his partner, Donald J. Chouinard, of Portland, Patti L. Clemons of Machias and Kevin D. Clemons and his companion, Diane Dobson, of South Portland; five great-grandchildren, William D. Clemons of Pennsylvania, Mathew S. Clemons of Campobello Island, Marcedas K. Hatt of Machias, Jason R. Hatt and Kelly R. Hatt, both of Holden; a sister, Frances Wolley of Longmont, Calif. and many nieces and nephews. Services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, at the Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, 6 Cooper St., Machias. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be held after the service at the Jacksonville Cemetery, East Machias.
