NEWBURGH – Vernice Baker Newcomb passed away peacefully March 30, 2007, surrounded by her loving family, at a Bangor hospital. Vernice was born May 10, 1926, in Winterport, the daughter of Elwin and Doris (Clark) Baker. Vernice attended Winterport schools and was a graduate of Winterport High School. After marrying her husband, Augustus Newcomb, she moved to Newburgh, where she was a lifelong resident. Community service was a priority to Vernice, as she was a member of the Newburgh Fire Department Auxiliary, treasurer of the Newburgh Cemetery Committee for 20 years, a member of the University of Maine Cooperative Extension and the Christmas Club. In her spare time she enjoyed cooking, playing cribbage, brook fishing, gardening, traveling and keeping up on current events. Vernice is survived by one son, Allan E. Newcomb and wife, Coral; one daughter, Carolyn N. Bates; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Bates, Jennifer Grabowski and Jeffrey Newcomb; one great-grand-child, Ashley Grabowski; two brothers, Earl Baker and Doreal Baker; two sisters, Gloria Harriman and Theola Doak; special nieces and nephews, Sandra, Sharon, Diane, Randall, Ronald, Dorilyn and Dalton, as well as many close friends. Vernice was predeceased by her husband, Augustus Newcomb. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden, with the Rev. Charles G. Farley, pastor of the West Hampden Baptist Church, officiating. Family and friends may visit 10 a.m. until the time of service. A continued time of visitation with refreshments will be held at the funeral home after the service. Interment will be after at Chapman Cemetery, Newburgh.
