MACHIAS — A 25-year-old Calais man who was charged with aggravated assault was sentenced Tuesday in Washington County Superior Court to two years with the Department of Corrections for trying to cut his friend’s throat.
Phillip A. Kennard, standing with his attorney Norman Toffolon of Machias, was sentenced by Judge E. Allen Hunter.
Calais police were called to a residence around 2 a.m. on July 31, 2007, where they found Kennard, his friend Randy Lincoln, 44, and one of Kennard’s family members. The three had spent the night drinking, an affidavit on file with the court said.
When the family member went to lie down, the two men continued to drink beer.
Lincoln then said he planned to crawl into bed with the family member, but Kennard objected. “Randy laid down on the couch and awoke to find Kennard dragging a knife across his throat,” the court documents said.
Kennard then went outside the house.
When he returned, he told Lincoln he was sorry and got him some paper towels and a clean shirt.
Kennard then woke up his family member and told her what had happened. “She ran to a store to call the police,” the affidavit said.
Lincoln was taken to the hospital and Kennard was arrested.
