CUSHING, Maine — A young man from Cushing has become Maine’s first snowmobile fatality this winter after tumbling into the path of an oncoming car on a town road.
Maine State Police say 19-year-old Derek Benner was operating a snowmobile at a high rate of speed on River Road shortly after 5 p.m. Monday when he either fell or was thrown from his machine into the road.
He was struck and killed by a car driven by 18-year-old Tyler Wadford, also of Cushing. Wadford was not hurt.
There were 12 snowmobile fatalities in Maine last winter.
