FARMINGTON, Maine — A 26-year-old Wilton man is facing up to 30 years in prison if he’s convicted of manslaughter in the death of his girlfriend’s 17-month-old son last November.

David Cook was indicted Wednesday in the death of Matteo Hanson at the Wilton apartment the child shared with his mother while Cook was watching the boy. He pleaded not guilty to the charge on Friday in court in Farmington.

The boy’s mother was at work.

Cook told police Matteo fell down a flight of stairs, possibly pushed by another child.

But a medical examiner found the boy died from blunt force trauma, consistent with being kicked or punched.

Cook is being held for lack of bail.
