BANGOR, Maine — City police have closed their investigation into a March 22 car crash in which two young Glenburn men were injured when the car they were traveling in went out of control on Broadway, hit a snowbank and flew through the air before crashing into a vacant house.

The driver of the car was Samuel Chase, 20, and the passenger was his brother Leo Chase, 18.

Testing conducted on the driver after the accident came back negative for the presence of both alcohol and drugs, according to Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards. He declined to comment on whether the driver experienced a medical problem in the moments leading up to the crash.

Edwards said no charges would be filed in connection with the accident.

“The case is closed,” Edwards said.

According to police reports, the car was moving at a high rate of speed headed toward downtown on Broadway when Samuel Chase lost control of the vehicle.

Witnesses said the car, a 2001 Mercury station wagon, skidded across the northbound lanes of Broadway, jumped a section of curbing, went airborne and crashed into the side of an empty wood-frame house at 499 Broadway, leaving a large hole in the side of the building before coming to rest on its roof.

The station wagon was a total loss and the vacant house had about $10,000 in damage.
