DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine — Purple and white again reigned supreme over the Penobscot Valley Conference Class C track and field championships at Oakes Field.
John Bapst of Bangor swept the team titles for the second consecutive year, with the girls winning comfortably and the boys dramatically.
The John Bapst boys edged Central of Corinth 86-83 while Foxcroft was third with 70. Dexter and Bucksport tied for fourth with 47 points.
The Crusaders defeated Orono 179-140 in the girls competition, while Mattanawcook of Lincoln was third in the 15-school field with 59 points, Fort Kent fourth with 50 and Foxcroft fifth with 40.
Outstanding performer honors went to Mattanawcook’s Hillary Pelkey in the girls meet and John Bapst’s Chris Fogler in the boys competition.
Fogler was a vital piece in the Crusaders’ championship puzzle, winning the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles, 200 dash and anchoring a winning 4×400 relay team that cemented the win.
Bapst trailed Central 83-76 heading into that final race, and the Crusaders vaulted ahead by virtue of their victory and the Red Devils finishing out of the top six.
Fogler was timed in 15.25 seconds in the 110 hurdles, 39.23 in the 300 hurdles and 23.02 in the 200. He and teammates Chad Hensley, Sean Gilbert and Stuart Lenz were timed in 3:45.28 in the 4×400.
Bapst’s other individual champ was freshman Gabe Stewart, who won the 3,200 in 10:31.72.
Central got two victories from senior Joe Brown as he won the discus with a best of 121 feet, 2 inches, and the shot put with a heave of 47-2½. He was third in the javelin.
The Red Devils also picked up wins from Anthony Cappuccio in the 1,600 race walk (9:41.46) and from Tyler Duncan in the long jump (19-8¼).
Other individual champs were Jared Waite of Schenck of East Millinocket in the 100, Dexter’s Nathan Wyman in the 1,600, Vincent Tymoczko of Bucksport in the 400, Matt Claar of Orono in the 800, Zach Sadlon of Stearns of Millinocket in the high jump, Penquis of Milo’s Joe Leland in the triple jump and Jason LeSaldo of Fort Kent in the javelin.
Bapst set the tone early in the girls meet by winning the day’s first event, the 4×800 relay in 10:35.89.
The Crusaders countered Orono’s depth in the hurdles and pole vault with their own depth, particularly in the three distance races, all won by Bapst runners.
Maggie Bryan took the 1,600 and 800, but had help in both races. Kim Spencer, Mary Carmack and Amanda Lalime finished 2-4-6 in the 1,600 while Charlotte Firestone and Tara Nitardy were fourth and sixth in the 800.
Laura Donovan won the 3,200 with Spencer and Carmack finishing second and third.
Other individual champs for Bapst were Stesha Rudnicki in the high jump and Maria Ullo in the triple jump.
Orono was led by its hurdlers, with Chelsea Wagner taking the 100s and 300s and Holli Kenison finishing second in the 100s and third in the 300s. Shelby Wheeler was third in the 100s, and also won the pole vault at 9-6.
Fort Kent’s Jamie Pelletier swept the sprints, winning the 100 in 13.08, 200 in 26.86 and 400 in 1:01.06.
MA’s Pelkey claimed the long jump (15-6¼), shot put (33-9½) and javelin (108-2) and was second in the high jump.
