BANGOR, Maine — The chairman of one of three working groups looking at changes to the University of Maine System structure says a new business model is needed.

David Flanagan, former Central Maine Power president, says it’s appropriate to keep all seven campuses but he says they need to be “right-sized” for their missions. He says the new business model would be based on coordinated and complementary services that eliminate redundancy and retain students.

Three reports were delivered Monday to trustees. The comments will be used by university presidents as they prepare a draft comprehensive plan to be submitted in September.

Chancellor Richard Pattenaude called for the initiative, dubbed “New Challenges, New Directions,” which aims to identify more than $42 million in cost-savings or new revenue over four years.
