BELFAST, Maine — City voters will encounter contests in two City Council races and an incumbent mayor without a challenger when they go to the polls in November for the municipal election.
Former Mayor Michael Hurley will join incumbent Councilor Janet Anderson and a third challenger, Jonathan Clapp, in the race to represent Ward 4 for the next two years.
Hurley stepped down as mayor two years ago, after having served four terms. Kaler Road resident Anderson is running for re-election to a second term. Joining them on the ballot is political newcomer Clapp, a High Street neighbor of Hurley’s.
Belmont Avenue resident Michael Dassett and Main Street resident Eric Sanders will square off for the Ward 3 seat now held by Catherine Heberer. Heberer is stepping down after serving two terms.
Mayor Walter Ash is unopposed in his race for a second two-year term.
Margaret Andrews of Condon Street is unopposed for a three-year term on the RSU 20 board of directors, as is Primrose Street resident Orya Shoman, who is running for a one-year term on the school board.
The lottery for ballot positions was drawn Monday. For the City Council race for Ward 3 Dassett will top the ticket followed by Sanders. In the Ward 4 race, incumbent Anderson will be first, followed by Hurley and then Clapp.
The election will take place Tuesday, Nov. 3, and the polls will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Residents in Wards 1 and 2 will vote at the Boathouse at Steamboat Landing; those in Wards 3 and 4 will cast ballots at City Hall; and residents of Ward 5 will vote at the United Methodist Church on Mill Lane.
