ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Charles “Chuck” Franklin Wendel, 67, formerly of Houlton, died Nov. 4, 2009, at his residence, of heart failure. Chuck was born Jan. 4, 1942, in Medina, N.Y. Chuck received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1969 from Canisius College; a Master of Arts degree in 1972 from Niagara University; a Master of Science in 1973 from Duquesne University; and a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. He was a director of counseling at Allegheny Intermediate Unit, Pittsburgh; director of counseling at Avon Grove High School, Avon Grove, Pa.; Greenville/Union 60, Greenville; and Southern Aroostook Community Schools, Island Falls. He was a board member of Maine Audubon Society; he published a book of poetry, conducted bird habitat research assessments and was past president of Pennsylvania State Counseling Association. Chuck was licensed to counsel in Maine, Maryland and Pennsylvania, and was a university lecturer in Maine, New York and Pennsylvania. He liked birding, participated in Christmas Bird Counts for 25-plus years and started a quilt guild in Greenville. His family includes his wife, Sarah Anne Wendel, whom he married May 19, 1988; his first wife, Patricia Wendel, who he married Oct. 8, 1978, and divorced in 1987; son, Thearin R. Wendel of Kensington, Md.; sisters, Patricia Pincus of Pittsford, N.Y., Jacqueline Cisteros of Anguilla, British Virgin Islands; grandson, Alex Wendel of Kensington, Md.; parents, Theresa J. Wendel of Penfield, N.Y., and the late George W. Wendel; daughter-in-law, Sandra Novotny; and brother-in-law, Ralph Cisteros. A Mass of Christian burial will be held 9 a.m. Monday, Nov. 9, at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 620 North Bestgate Road, Annapolis, Md. A memorial gathering will be held 5-8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9, at John M. Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St., Annapolis, Md.
