For weeks, I wanted America to get rid of Tim Urban from “American Idol,” and now that they did I think they might have made a mistake and the Man on the Couch agrees. While likely not popular, Tim has shown some serious promise the last couple of weeks and I think it was time to say goodbye to Siobhan Magnus.
The first time you hit a screechingly high note with perfect pitch and hold it for eternity — way to go. The second time — great job for proving it wasn’t a fluke. The third time, when you can’t knock it out of the park and it seems to be the only trick up your sleeve — time to go.
I wasn’t impressed either with most of the live performances that were part of “Idol Gives Back.” The Black Eyed Peas should have been on TLC’s “What Not to Wear” and the new version of “Stairway to Heaven” certainly doesn’t deserve a halo. As many said leading up to the much-anticipated performance — some things should just be left alone.
But as we all know, my opinion matters very little (not at all) when it comes to these things.
When I can, on the other hand, show extreme signs of joy is in the fact that Octomom Nadya Suleman told Oprah Winfrey this week that she’ll never do reality TV. And if she told it to Oprah, it must be true.
I was waiting for another Kate Gosselin train wreck, but fortunately it’s been avoided for now.
Finally, one quick update this week. Food Network has revealed the cast for the upcoming season of “The Next Food Network Star,” which will debut June 9. Sixth-season challenges, according to Reality TV World, will include, “catering a star-studded MGD 64 after-party with Grammy-winner Colbie Caillat, serving up dishes inspired by classic carnival sweets at the Santa Monica Pier, creating and operating lunch trucks on Venice Beach, using cereal to cook dinner with breakfast and impressing special guest stars Eva Longoria-Parker and Todd English by illustrating an ‘emotion’ through a dish at their Beso restaurant.”
While “Top Chef” remains my favorite cooking reality show, this one ranks up there pretty close.
