What began as a follow-up on a report of an erratic driver ended in the May 29 arrest of a Jonesport man on multiple drug and motor vehicle charges.

Michael Thomas Jadu, 46, came to the attention of law enforcement after Penobscot County dispatchers received a report of an erratic driver in Clifton who was heading toward Brewer, Brewer police Detective Nelson Feero said Wednesday.

The vehicle — an older Ford pickup towing a load of bicycles on a trailer — was located on North Main Street in Brewer about 10:40 p.m. by Brewer police Officer Rodney Gerald, Feero said.

During the subsequent traffic stop, police determined that Jadu not only lacked a valid driver’s license but that he also illegally possessed prescription drugs, a usable amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, Feero said.

He said Jadu also was on bail at the time with the condition that he not commit any new offenses.

Jadu, who was taken to Penobscot County Jail after his arrest, since has been released on bail, Feero said. (Dawn Gagnon, BDN)

A New Haven, Conn., man was arrested after leading Bangor police on a brief chase through an Odlin Road nightclub.

Police, however, caught up with 21-year-old Karl Stephens after he reportedly slipped on some spilled spirits, Bangor police Lt. Jeff Millard said Friday, citing a police report.

Millard said the episode began when a city police officer saw Stephens with plastic bags of a yellowish-white powder that later field-tested positive for crack cocaine, Millard said.

He said that when police asked the suspect to show them the contents of his pockets, Stephens removed several items but tried to conceal the bags, and then tossed them away as he ran from police, who apprehended him after his fall in the club.

Stephens, who was charged with unlawful drug trafficking, refusal to submit to arrest and falsifying evidence, was taken to Penobscot County Jail. He since has been released on bail. (Dawn Gagnon, BDN)
