PORTLAND, Maine — Maine’s first Roman Catholic radio station hits the airwaves this week.
The launch of WXTP — The Presence — will be marked fittingly with a celebration of Mass on Wednesday at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland.
The Presence Radio Network, a non-profit corporation, was formed in January to purchase the former WHXR-FM. The Presence will be operated as a non-commercial, listener-supported station.
The station has a short-term lease agreement for studio space in Freeport, using a tower in Gray. The network has also purchased a construction permit to provide Catholic radio for the Bangor area.
