PORTLAND, Maine — Residents of a Maine island that is a part of the city of Portland are going to consider whether to launch an effort to secede from the city.
Peaks islanders are being invited to a meeting on Saturday to discuss the issue.
A similar effort failed four years ago when the Legislature refused to go along.
Some islanders feel the city is ignoring their needs. For example, islanders asked for a greater police presence and more financial help for the ferry that serves the island. Instead, the city reduced both.
Meeting organizer Sid Gerard tells the Portland Press Herald that if a majority indicates an interest in secession, they will seek a state legislator to introduce a secession bill.
