BANGOR, Maine — A Bangor police officer helped a 20-year-old man to safety on Christmas Eve.

Officer Joshua Wotton was flagged down about 10:15 p.m. Friday by a person on Hammond Street near the Interstate 95 overpass, Bangor police said Saturday.

The person expressed concern for a man who was sitting on the railing of the bridge and looking down at traffic whizzing by underneath him.

As Wotton approached him, the 20-year-old man leaned away from the officer but said he needed help.

The 20-year-old, who was not identified by police and whose address was not known, voluntarily got into Wotton’s squad car a few minutes after the officer approached him, according to Bangor police.

Wotton took him to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.
