PORTLAND – John T. Hawes Sr., 72, passed away peacefully Dec. 27, 2010, at his home. He was born Jan. 28, 1938, and lived for many years in the Bangor area before moving to Portland. He is survived by his brother, Frank Hawes of Jamestown, Ky.; three children, John Hawes Jr. of Farmington, Kurt Hawes of Jay and Kellee Greatorex-Hawes of Eddington; as well as 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He served in the U.S. Navy as a young man and then went to work in the shoe shops. In his later years he was employed as a prep cook in Portland. A very private person, he gained the respect and friendship of those he worked with and had contact with. A small, private family graveside service will be held in the spring.
