BAR HARBOR – Kathryn Stover Mittelberger died Jan. 2, 2011, surrounded by family in Bar Harbor, after a brief illness. Kathryn was born Dec. 26, 1926, in Bar Harbor, to Arthur M. Stover and A. Isabelle (Marshall) Stover. She grew up between Bar Harbor and Trenton. Kathryn graduated from Bar Harbor High School, Wheaton College in Massachusetts and New York University, where she received a master’s degree in English literature. She taught high school in Massachusetts and worked as an editor in New York City, where she met her husband, Ernest Mittelberger of Munich, Germany. She moved to San Francisco in 1956. There she worked many years as a high school English teacher and teacher of English as a second language. Predeceased by her husband in 1983, she returned to Bar Harbor to live near her mother and extended network of family and friends. Kathryn enjoyed reading novels and mysteries, playing bridge, and talking with friends and family. She spent her last years in the house built by her father after the Bar Harbor fire and every summer at her camp, “Mittelhaus” in Trenton. She was grounded deeply in her New England roots and was widely appreciated for her down to earth blend of values and Trenton humor. She believed in America as a land of opportunity. She was a member of Bar Harbor Congregational Church. Her many years of service included volunteer work at Jesup Memorial Library, Bar Harbor Historical Society and Mount Desert Island hospital auxiliary. Kathryn is survived by her daughter, Diana Mittelberger and her partner, Ron Lubbers; her son, Dr. James Mittelberger and his wife, Anne Mudge, Esq., and their two children, Alison Mittelberger and Benjamin Mittelberger. She is also survived by her brother, Donald Stover and his wife, Nancy (King) Stover; sister-in-law, Mary (Whitcomb) Stover; many cousins, nieces, nephews and other family.
