PHILADELPHIA — A Philadelphia college newspaper has gone topless to publish a story alleging a professor used exotic dancers in a business seminar.

La Salle University students say administrators would not let them print the story above the fold on the front page. So the top half of Thursday’s Collegian is blank, except for the words “See below the fold.”

Officials at the private Roman Catholic university have previously confirmed an investigation of the March 21 seminar.

The newspaper’s executive editor, Vinny Vella, says administrators initially forbade him from printing the article at all until their investigation was complete.

They relented after the Philadelphia City Paper broke the story April 8 but issued the story-location caveat. The university’s dean declined to comment.

Study: Half of meat may have staph bug

ATLANTA — A new report estimates that half the meat and poultry sold in the supermarket may be tainted with the staph germ.

That estimate is based on 136 samples of beef, chicken, pork and turkey purchased from grocery stores in Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Flagstaff, Ariz., and Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Researchers found more than half contained Staphylococcus aureus, bacteria that can make people sick. Worse, half of those contaminated samples had a form of the bacteria resistant to at least three kinds of antibiotics.

Proper cooking should kill the germs. But the report suggests that consumers should be careful to wash their hands and take other steps not to spread bacteria during food preparation.

Man bites dog then sues police

PHOENIX — A 33-year-old man who bit back after he was caught by a Phoenix police dog is suing police.

Erin Sullivan alleges the dog violated his civil rights and used excessive force to capture him after he ran from officers in Glendale during a burglary investigation last year.

Police say Sullivan bit the dog back, injuring it.

Precursor filings to the lawsuit sought $200,000 from Glendale and $250,000 from Phoenix.

Sullivan is serving eight years for convictions in the Glendale burglary.

Virgin Galactic seeking private spaceship pilots

MOJAVE, Calif. — Virgin Galactic is seeking people with the right stuff.

The Antelope Valley Press in California says the spaceline founded by Sir Richard Branson has put out a call for pilots to operate its SpaceShipTwo spacecraft and WhiteKnightTwo mother ship.

Those selected would fly during development testing now under way and commercial operations at some point in the future.

The company is looking for test pilots who graduated from a respectable flight school and who have a minimum of 3,000 hours of flying experience. Prior spaceflight experience is a plus, but not required.

Virgin Galactic plans to fly tourists on brief suborbital flights at a cost of $200,000 per person.

SpaceShipTwo is based on the design of SpaceShipOne, the first private manned craft to reach space.
