Community picnic to be held in Owls Head
OWLS HEAD, Maine — The Mussel Ridge Historical Society will hold its annual Owls Head Community Pot Luck Picnic from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, July 24, at the Old Homestead at 453 Ash Point Drive.
Everyone is welcome and the event is free although donations will be gratefully accepted. Everyone attending is asked to bring a salad, casserole, side dish, appetizer or dessert to share. Community agency collecting school supplies
ELLSWORTH, Maine — The Washington Hancock Community Agency is collecting new backpacks and school supplies and distributing them to families in need as part of its Backpacks to School project.
Donations of new backpacks, notebooks, pens, paper and other school supplies may be made at WHCA offices at 248 Bucksport Road in Ellsworth or 2 Maple St. in Milbridge. Offices are open 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Herbal wreath workshop to be held in Ellsworth
ELLSWORTH, Maine — Holly and Gretchen Beliveau of The Roots of Wellness in Charleston will lead an herbal wreath workshop 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday, July 29, at Woodlawn Museum, 172 Surry Road.
The workshop will demonstrate how to make a small Italian herbal soup wreath. Participants will be guided step by step to make a wreath to take home and be taught how to create a unique envelope to use as decorative packaging for the wreath.

Cheese roll championship to be held in Belfast
BELFAST, Maine — The New World Cheese Roll Championship will be sponsored by Rockport’s State of Maine Cheese Co. at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 17, on Belfast Common.
The cheese roll is part of the Maine Celtic Celebration in Belfast. It begins with a 3-pound roll of cheese being rolled down the slope on Belfast Common. Each group of contestants will sprint toward the bay to catch up with and grab the cheese wheel. The one left holding the cheese gets to take it home.

Mid-Coast Audobon garden tour tickets available
BREMEN, Maine — Tickets are still available for Mid-Coast Audubon’s fundraising garden tour at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 23.
The tour begins in Bremen. Stops will include a meadow property adjoining a tidal salt marsh, a shady forested site, and a mixed riverside garden with field, water feature and diverse plantings.
Tourists will meet Steve Kress, author of “The Bird Garden” and “The Audubon Society Guide to Attracting Birds” and founder and director of Audubon’s Project Puffin.

‘The Unusual Life of the Porcupine’ in Winter Harbor
WINTER HARBOR, Maine — The Schoodic Lecture Series presents “The Unusual Life of the Porcupine” with Dr. Linda Ilse at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 27, at Moore Auditorium.
Ilse, wildlife ecologist with the University of Maine, has studied porcupines in Maine and in the West. She will speak about her research on the natural history of porcupines, the effects of porcupines on trees, and her findings from her work on the Schoodic Peninsula.
