PORTLAND, Maine — A fire in a three-story apartment building led to several dramatic rescues, with some people saving themselves by escaping through windows.
Portland firefighters used a ladder to rescue a woman from the third-floor apartment unit on Sherman Street while others escaped through windows and lowered a baby to neighbors waiting below.
The fire was reported at 2 p.m. Friday and quickly was extinguished.
The Portland Press Herald said one woman said she was hanging from a second-floor window sill before firefighters were able to lower her to safety.
