LAMOINE, Maine —- Maine State Police are investigating the death of a woman found dead Sunday morning in a submerged rental car in Eastern Bay.
According to a statement released by police, the body of Joann Boardman, 48, of Palm Coast, Fla., was found around 6:30 a.m. in a car submerged in the water at the end of Route 184. A passer-by saw the roof of the car sticking out of the water and called police.
A popular beach and swimming area with views of Mount Desert Island is at the end of the highway.
“It appears that Boardman had just left a family wedding reception to return to her hotel in Hancock but headed in the wrong direction,” state police wrote in the statement. “Boardman was not familiar with the area of the crash where the paved road ends at the ocean’s edge.”
The rental car was a 2012 silver-colored Ford Focus registered to EAN Holdings LLC of Tulsa, Okla., according to police. The accident is under investigation by Maine State Police Detective Carleton Small.
