ORRINGTON, Maine — Jody Croft is working to help her friend Dawna Moore Hensley in the biggest fight of her life. Hensley has multiple myeloma, which is cancer of the plasma cells in bone marrow.

Croft is organizing a “Songs for Dawna” benefit concert that will be held at the Center Drive School on Sunday. The concert will run from 4 to 8 p.m., with music in the gymnasium and a dinner in the cafeteria.

Hensley, a resident of Orrington and a longtime employee of Geaghan’s Pub in Bangor, is the single mother of a son, Chad, a senior at John Bapst High School.

Hensley was diagnosed with the stage 3 multiple myeloma earlier this year and underwent a bone marrow transplant in Boston on Nov. 13.

Bill Pierce, a local musician who gives guitar lessons at Mark’s Music in Brewer, has contributed to the fundraising effort. Some of his students have created an album, “Songs for Dawna,” which will be for sale for $10 at the dinner, with all proceeds aiding Hensley’s cause.

“The students have worked all through the summer, written their own songs, gone to the studio and put down the tracks,” Croft said.

The music the students put together is all acoustic, Croft said.

Croft’s son, Austin, a senior at Brewer High, was once a student of Pierce’s, along with Hensley’s son.

Croft has distributed a letter and flier about Sunday’s benefit. She also created a posting for the event on Facebook, and more than 100 people have said they will attend, Croft said.

“We’re keeping our fingers crossed,” said Croft.

The John Bapst High School Jazz Band will be on hand to perform during the dinner, while the school’s football team will be volunteering as well, along with the Boy and Girl Scouts of Orrington. Croft said Hensley hopes to return home before Christmas.

The dinner will be $5 per person or $15 for a family, and Croft is trying to get things together for a silent auction. Tickets can be purchased at the door. Spaghetti, donated by Pizza Land in Orrington, will be served along with rolls donated by Geaghan’s, as well as desserts, soft drinks and coffee.

Donations may be sent to Center Drive School, Attn: Songs for Dawna Benefit, 17 School Street, Orrington 04474.
