PORTLAND, Maine — Wall Street protesters who have been camping in Lincoln Park since Oct. 3 have met a demand by the city of Portland to apply for a permit.
OccupyMaine delivered the petition to the city shortly after 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. It seeks to keep the encampment open for another 179 days, after which the group could seek an extension.
The group asked that there be no limit on the number of tents and asked the city to waive a requirement for liability insurance.
OccupyMaine members agreed to the city’s request days after police responded to four violent incidents around Thanksgiving.
The City Council’s public safety committee will review the request Thursday and the City Council will consider it next week.
