DEXTER, Maine — A Dexter man was arrested Friday after police say he tried to steal a Top-O-Matic cigarette machine from a local convenience store.

James Henry Beal Jr., 52, is facing a misdemeanor charge of theft after he tried to walk out of the Dexter Variety store on Route 7 with the cigarette machine, which is valued at $51.39, Dexter Police Chief Jim Emerson said Tuesday.

“A customer actually witnessed this person trying to steal this [machine] and told the clerk,” Emerson said.

The clerk subsequently called 911, and a witness even told Beal to come back into the store after he tried to leave with the machine, according to Emerson.

Top-O-Matic machines are used by people to roll their own cigarettes.

No weapons were involved in the crime, Emerson said, and Dexter police Officer Alan Grinnell arrested Beal and took him to the Dexter Police Department, and he later was released on bail.

Beal faces up to six months in jail if he is convicted of the Class E offense. (Ryan McLaughlin, BDN)
