ORONO, Maine — A Bangor man was charged with marijuana possession Tuesday night after police discovered the drug in his vehicle during a traffic stop.
Jesse Wood, 18, of Bangor was pulled over on Orchard Trails Drive because his vehicle had no headlights on, Orono police Captain Josh Ewing said Wednesday.
“When [the officer] got to the driver’s door he could smell fresh marijuana,” Ewing said.
A search of the car also turned up rolling papers which can be considered drug paraphernalia, according to Ewing.
Wood was charged with possession of a usable amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia but was not arrested, Ewing said. Wood’s two passengers, two 18-year-old males, were not charged.

Let’s name him police captain of the year.
1) “When [the officer] got to the driver’s door he could smell fresh marijuana,” Ewing said.
(It’s a good thing the officer can distinguish between fresh and stale marijuana. It makes me feel safer.)
2) A search of the car also turned up rolling papers which can be considered drug paraphernalia, according to Ewing.
(I suppose he could say the same if he found a book of matches or a bic lighter in the car)
In my younger years, I put fresh/stale/roaches on my red hot car lighter.Wicked nose hits.
The cannabis prohibition is expensive, counterproductive and long overdue for repeal. Mr. Wood should have received a warning about the headlights and nothing more.
LEGALIZE IT!!!!!
What a waste of money. With so much real crime and so many victims in the news everyday why do we still enforce this archaic law???
The fact that this is “news” makes me laugh. I’m surprised his picture wasn’t posted as well. Dumb…
People fear what they don’t understand. LEGALIZE IT!
Is the odor of marijuana probable cause to believe that a crime has been committed, so the car can be searched?
I thought marijuana had been decriminalized.
OUI is a crime, and the definition encompasses drug impaired driving. I’m assuming that’s why the article specifies that the officer smelled “fresh” marijuana, if what that means is fresh smoke.

Thank you for the citation (so to speak :), it was very helpful.
(I love you, man);-)
I didn’t pick up on that issue in the story until you mentioned it. I still wonder whether it was legit under Maine law.
Phew! That was close.
How dumb do the cops feel when they have to bust somebody for a little ganja? They probably could have issued a citation for driving too slow also.
Am I the only one on here that sees what pot does to young people? I really don’t want to be on the roads ‘competing’ against drivers who are stoned. Their reaction time is slow, and they are most likely distracted when their pot smoking friends are with them.
I would rather ride with someone that is stoned than someone that is drunk
Same here but you have to keep them away from convenience stores and fast food joints. It gets expensive.
Fffffffffp…Ohhhh mannnnn…Big Mac, Large fries, Icy cold coke….fffffffpp…make that 2 big macs and supersize me dude!
The third option is glaringly missing : NEITHER!
Your right. Keep it at home.
You are right,
NEITHER is not a real option because the government can’t enforce their
own laws effectively. Is there a lesson in that fact?
All I said was that given a choice of riding with a drunk or a stoner, I would choose neither.
Since I have no idea what you’re talking about, I can’t guess what ‘lesson’ in your question may be.
So fine, good for you.
But the question is: which is worse.
OK, I”ll grab onto your trolling for the last time. I should have known better the first time:
The question posed by TEXASMAINER was who would you rather RIDE with.
Neither!!
As far as your leading question as to which is worse, that was NOT was I was talking about and YOU will not GOAD me into answering which is the worse scourge society or in the great scheme of things. It’s irrelevant to the question posed. :-(
How about someone who is neither?
Do you see what alcohol, which is legal, does to people, too ?
You have no point unless you want to reinstate Prohibition, too, do you ?
Even though it never gets framed this way, because it is too politically incorrect
to not pretend the war on drugs does any good, that big government is not in control,
which would parent and teacher prefer, kids to smoke a joint a day,
or drink a pint of hard liquor per day ?
Saying both are wrong, illegal, or equally bad, is not allowed in this mind experiment.
Choose one only.
Which is worse (or better) for the kids, all who can and many do get access to both ?
Wowwwww mannnnn……. So stoned……………….
This is so cool driving with out the headlights.
Hey look dudes, cool blue lights all around us.
Dope.
LOL
Maine is lucky to have honest bodyguards to protect them,
The FBI just busted 3 Mass State Police officers . The FBI agents who made the arrest work for an organization that has been tied to the JFK and Martin Luther King assassinations.
Two reads in one. Anybody spot the hack Cain? How about Haskell?

msfreeh comments are THE BEST. i love them.
Free the Green!!
WOW, Ground Breaking News! Also in other news, Mrs. Smith saved a cat crossing the street!
Rolling papers?? Charged with paraphernalia?? I’d like to see a police officer try and explain to me his position and charge me with having papers. Wouldn’t happen.
Pretty sure it was the rolling papers AND the smell of pot that got him charged. Seriously…..
What a waste of resources. Pot is nothing. It should be legalized.
Orchard Trails Drive, is that in the Regency trailer park???
How did the officer know it was fresh marijuana when he smelled it? It could of been some old stale roach he found in an ashtray somewhere.
so marijuana is de-criminalized in this state. I think it is redeiclous and slander to report about this in the paper. It is the same kind of charge that you would get for speeding so why put it in the paper.
Why would this be in the paper? It is decriminalized. The police should looking for people on bathsalts or helping abused children not chasing marijuana.
Eh, live and learn.
