BANGOR, Maine — A local man was arrested Wednesday afternoon charged with filing a false public report after he went to the police station and said a police lieutenant took $500 from him earlier in the day, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said Thursday.

Shawn Beede, 21, of Bangor showed up at the Bangor Police Station at around 1:30 p.m. with a friend who he claimed saw Lt. Tim Reid rip off Beede about an hour before, the sergeant said.

Reid, who leads the department’s Criminal Investigations Division, was in plain clothes and in an unmarked car at around 12:30 p.m. when he stopped to check on a man, later identified as

Beede, who reportedly was hanging around and acting suspiciously at the corner of Pine and State Streets.

“Beede was alone and comes down with a second guy who said he was there,” Edwards said. “[The second man] came down and claimed he was going to be a witness. After a very short interview it was determined it wasn’t the case.”

Beede was arrested and charged with making a false public report and was taken to Penobscot County Jail. He was later released on bail.

Checking on suspicious behavior happens every day, Edwards said.

“Lt. Reid called on the radio that he was out with the man and Officer Jason Stuart assisted him about a minute later,” the sergeant said in a statement. “Lt. Reid asked for identification from [Beede] and he became argumentative and uncooperative, so he was told to leave the area.”

Beede claims, “Lt. Reid [stole] $500 in cash before Stuart pulled up at the corner” and that Reid “stuffed it in his pocket stating that it was drug money,” Edwards said in the press release. “He said his friend actually witnessed the theft. Beede was insistent that he wanted a receipt for the cash taken or for Lt. Reid to be investigated for stealing his money.”

After separating Beede and his friend and interviewing them individually, Beede was arrested.

Beede was convicted of possessing marijuana in November 2010 and has convictions from 2009 for domestic violence assault and violating his conditions of release, according to prior court listings printed in the Bangor Daily News.

  1. Unfortuanly this is what makes our fine officers in the State of Maine lose faith in people. Being a cop can not be worth it….dont blame the ones getting out

    1. Politics make it so difficult for law enforcement . I do not think Gastia would kept  a police man that would do something like this.  Mr. Reid is a respected police man .

  2. Must have thought the BPD was going to give him some money. Probably needed a fix of some sort! It takes all types to make the world go around!

  3. I’m thinking Mr. Reid did not take is money. Years ago a police man took my fireworks . latter shot them off himself. I asked him about it years latter . I said you had no right to do that. He said to me you know you are right but who were they going to believe you a kid or me a cop.  He has long since retired.  I am not saying police can not be corrupt, just they have come a long ways.  Hats off to you MR. Reid . Bozos like this gives anyone who questions authority a name. Keep the faith we have come a long ways.

  4. Don’t make a complaint against the Bangor cops. They will through you in jail. If they don’t believe the guy had the money taken it is one thing. To prove he lied about it is another.

    1. Yes remember the election deputy MR. Mallar . He made a choice it might not have been the right one . That was his job to make the choice MR. Dearing put him though the ringer . Almost slandering the man .

      1. Actually Dearing didn’t do anything other than answer questions truthfully when he was asked about it.  Nice try though.

        1. Really? He wrote letters He said MR. Mallar  Had a reputation of being called whiney Wayne.  MR. Mallar does a lot of great things to help people . He worked with food cubards  and other programs to help low income people to to mention what be he did for Boy scouts.  Ye s he has brought a few things to people attension in the past usually when the look the other way about rule of laws being broken . He picked the wrong battle with MR. Dearing  and MR.   Gastia  . As election deputy he was using his judgement the best he new how. Should anyone be allowed to bring a gun to vote??? MR. Dearing still had many options too vote just seems to want to make a big deal about being inconvencened any the issue. Police do like any who questions authority.

          1. I stand corrected if he did in fact write a letter to Mallar.  With that said, writing a letter would be the LEAST I would do if I was denied my right to vote.  Mallar may do all kinds of great things but he didn’t on that day.  And it was later determined that he was WRONG.  So it’s OK for Mallar to do his job the best way he knows how but this cop, a Bangor citizen can’t vote as he has done for years?  Many cops have.  No, obviously not everyone should bring a gun to the polls but this wasn’t ANYONE was it?  It was a uniformed, police officer, in his jurisdiction.  The city pays BANGOR POLICE to work the polls.  They paid DEARING later that week to work the polls.  Early voting is set up to make voting easier for Bangor’s citizens, why must Dearing be different? How do you know that his schedule would have allowed him to do it another time?  Especially when there had been a established precedence for it for DECADES before this incident.  Which by the way is something Mr. Mallar knew very well.  Maybe cops don’t like anyone who questions their authority but who over stepped their authority that day?  Who had the power trip?  Maybe this is a case of you and him both have a problem with those who have some authority.

    2. Don’t make a false complaint against any cops.  They will throw you in jail.  As far as proving he lied, thats for the judge or the jury to decide.

        1. Once again, don’t make FALSE complaints against police.  It’s common sense.  THAT is BS.  It makes sense.  If you do, you SHOULD go to jail.  Are you advocating being able to make false reports to police with out consequence?

  5. I may be wrong, but it looks to me like this guy was mad because the cops messed with him, so he cooked up a story to try to get a little revenge. The problem is, when you make something up, and depend on someone else to back up your story, it usually falls apart. Which is why the guy ended up getting arrested.

  6. I feel bad for this mans family . But you know when your like this guy …jobless you need money from cops too!

  7. This fella wants a meal ticket . Looks like he couldn’t fill out an application unless it was for food stamps
