We all know why Maine is a great place to live, with its natural beauty, quiet lifestyle and friendly folk. Naturally, some very famous people have, over the years, been drawn to the Pine Tree State’s charms — and some very famous people have come out of the state itself. Some you probably already know about, such as Martha Stewart and Stephen King. Others may come as a surprise. Here’s our as-complete-as-possible list of celebrities that were either born in Maine, still live in Maine or have come here to visit. If you know of any others, be sure to tell us. 1. I think it’s a reasonable question.  Move to Maine when your 30 or born and raised here.  Big difference.  I wouldn’t move to California and call myself a Californian.  I’ve lived in Maine all my life, so technically I’m a Mainer no matter where I move to.  And I hardly think owning a home in Maine that is visited once or twice a year qualifies one as being a ‘face of Maine’.

        1. you know that actually was the way back in the 16-1700s your sir name hinted was where you were from.

          1. My great, great, great grandfather was a pirate from Acadia. Does it really matter these days? Is it just another reason to hate your neighbor?

          2. Who said anything about hating and being treated like an outsider? I think what we are getting at is the fact that there are those who become stars, can afford a house here, and now somehow have an affiliation with us. Many Mainers own property in Fla. but I hardly think they are included as Floridians. I don’t treat vacationers poorly and welcome their money into our economy. But just because you fly in and visit every so often and never had any roots here doesn’t make them a representative of Maine.

          3. I’ve been out of Maine plenty.  I don’t know where your hostility is coming from.  I wasn’t nasty in my comments, yet you seem to be defensive about the while situation.  Are you a transplant yourself maybe?

        2. When you move to another state do you expect to be treated like an “outsider”?  We are Americans living in the year 2012, people move where they please and if they can afford to bring dollars to Maine then I say “Great”.

        3. There are indeed some towns in Maine where you will NEVAH be a Mainah!

“Well, there’s old Clyde over there; talks up a good show for the Tourists, but I happen to know he was AT LEAST TWO WEEKS OLD before he EVAH set foot in Maine!”

      1. 100 percent of them are taxpayers
        **********************************
if they don’t live here year-round (or more than 183 days) then they don’t pay state income taxes.

          1. they must pay property taxes
            ****************************
yup! a BOATLOAD…well, compared to us ‘regular people’… those funds go right to the town though, and they are managed and controlled much better than if it were income taxes going to the state’s General Fund.

    1. I do think it’s worth distinguishing those who were born and raised in Maine, vs. those who bought their way in.

  1. Gee whiz my favorite Maine Actress got left off the list….Rachel Nichols…from Augusta.  She was the green girl in the latest Star Trek movie (note-latest I know of, I’m not a trekkie), and also in GI Joe rise of the cobra….I suggest doing a Bing image search.

    1. I know they are making another of those movies, so I suspect she’ll be back.  Yep, she was great in that movie…

    1. And Martha Stewart served 5 months in the slammer,  etc, etc….what is the point ?   Let he who is without sin cast the first stone……could You make it through recess in law school ?  Just wondering…..

      1. It’s refreshing to hear from someone who doesn’t know what he’s talking about, so I’ll try to explain the point to you:  A disbarred lawyer cannot practice law.  A lawyer who cannot practice law should not be considered a “star lawyer.”  F. Lee Bailey has been disbarred and, therefore, cannot practice law and should not be considered a “star lawyer.”

Now if that is too hard for you to grasp, I’ll distinguish Martha Stewart’s case.  Before she was convicted and served her sentence, Stewart was a business woman, an author, a television personality, and a magazine publisher.  After her conviction and service of her sentence, she’s still in business, appearing on television, and writing and publishing her books and a magazine.   Unlike Bailey, who cannot practice his profession because of his misconduct, Stewart can do what she did before.

And to answer your question, yes I could and did it make it through “recess in law school.”

    1. I’m sorry to say they met their passing,  around 4:30 just this evening,  at my dinner table.  It was a buttery death.

        1. I always euthanize my potatoes before I fry ’em….I hit ’em over the head and pay my respects while the oil heats up.

      1. 45 years ago the toy only came with the parts….you had to provide your own potato.  Wiki research:
The toy was originally produced as separate plastic parts that could be stuck into a real potato or other vegetable. Government regulations forced Hasbro into including a plastic potato body within the toy set.       Wow!  I never knew that!

  11. Reads like a who’s who of the D-list. Dancing With The Stars, anyone??? Celebrity Apprentice???

  12. The problem with a list like this is everyone and their relatives/friends through their 20th cousins are going to point out names you missed.  I’m no exception to this.

Writers: What about the husband & wife author team of Steve Miller and Sharon Lee of Winslow, who write the series of sci-fi books in the Liaden Universe they created?

Musicians: No mention of Schooner Fare’s Chuck & Steve Romanoff who have toured internationally sharing their unique Maine-folk flair?

Comedians: No mention of this category at all.  Bob Marley and Tim Sample.  ‘Nuf said.

      1. Miscategorized, so was missed as I read through the list.  I wouldn’t list him as an actor.  What movies/television series has he “stared” in other than stand-up comedy?

      1. You’re mixing him up with the “Bert & I” folks who he learned some of his stuff from.  He’s a native Mainah.

  13. Rick Pinnette with his band Oak hit the top 40 charts with a song called King of the Hill.  Wasn’t Rudolph Valentino a native Mainer too?  Also, how about the guy who sang the Maine Stein song……..Rudy Vallee? I think?

  20. A very similar article was in the Maine Sunday Telegram a couple weeks ago. way to keep up, BDN.

      1. You can blame Disqus for that. You can blame Disqus for that. You can blame Disqus for that.

It was telling me ‘error’ and giving every indication that my posts weren’t successful.

  21. A very similar article was in the Maine Sunday Telegram a couple weeks ago. Way to keep up, BDN.

Where’s retired Boston Red Sox pitcher Bob Stanley, who was born in Portland?

Retired Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Pete Ladd was also born in Portland.

Underwood finished third on “Survivor,” not second, if my memory serves me correctly.

That’s just from a cursory reading of this story…

  32. There is a Country Music Hall of Famer that lives in Corinna.  Her name escapes me at the moment, but when I remember her name I’ll put it on here.  Hopefully someone beats me to it though.  I don’t know if she’s from Maine but she certainly lives here now.

    1. Okay I found her.  Her name is Ginger Mae.  She’s in the Maine Country Music Hall of Fame.  I thought she was in the HOF in Nashville.

  33. This is all a big lie. The governor said that we do not have any rich people living in Maine. He would tax them of we did! lol.

      1. Yes, like our great governor who tried to claim a homestead exemption on his house in Florida?

        ——————————

        1. The Governor doesn’t appear to own a home in Maine, he is a resident of Maine and is paying income tax unless you have proof overwise, and the State of Florida ruled their homestead exemption was legit so no not just like our Governor.

          1. Yes, sure, all “legit”. The Florida house was in his wife’s name. All legit.

            ——————————

  34. Sandy Kofax the greatest left-hander of all time summers up in northern Maine somewhere. Seen him pitch and eat breakfast in Camden 50 years apart.

  35. What about Buffalo Bob Smith  he was the voice of Howdy Doody he had a summer place i believe on Pushshaw lake

  36. I didn’t know you had to buy your way in to Maine if not born here.  Last I knew it was one of the 50 states and anyone that chooses to live her are able.  As a transplant we are from away and reminded of it often, but didn’t have to buy our way in.

  37. I didn’t read most of the comments, but a “famous” person from Woodland/Baileyville area would be none other than Nashville’s current fretboard burner Johnny Hiland!  Youtube this guy if you love guitar….you won’t believe this stuff.  He’s been endorsed by Fender, PRS, and now MusicMan, been signed to Steve Vai’s Favored Nations label, among tons of other cool stuff.

    1. He was awesome when he performed at the American Folk Festival.. half the County came and claimed to know him.. the other half came and claimed to be his long lost cousin.. LOL

  38. Johny Hiland sponsored by  PRS ” Paul Reed Smith Guitars” has his own signature series guitar ….  Corey Beauilieu of Trivium is sponsored by ”Jackson Guitars” and has his own signature series guitar…. thats not  easy to come by  ……. wow u guys dropped the ball on this one and these are natives..thats 2 very famous guitar players that are still at the top of there game that are not in here …i can understand some of these other people u missed …but these two are in a lot of guitar magazine . the worst is bdn has never even written a story on Corey Beaulieu ….

  39. Sandy Koufax used to play in BDN’s  Paul Bunyan Golf Tournment every year in the 1970’s.  Nice man who enjoyed the true Mainers & the Tournament.

Until an “authograph seeker” might ruin his enjoyable day.

  40. What about Mildred Elizabeth Sisk, born in Portland, Maine.  Better known as “Axis Sally”.  She was employed by Nazi Germany to proliferate propaganda during WWII.  She was tried and convicted of treason after her capture in Berlin at the end of the war.  Be proud Maine.

  41. This is really impressive. Too bad the working man can’t afford to live here anymore. Maine used to be a working man’s utopia.

  42. The “non-famous people” are far more interesting. Herbie Green, the late long time police chief in Dover-Foxcroft, was way more interesting than anybody on that list. Lets here of the real Mainers who didn’t purchase property to make the list.

  43. I am trying real hard to understand the significanence of this article.  There are a lot of great people living in Maine that are not so famous yet celebrities in their on right.

  44. Authors: E.B White (Charlotte’s Web, Stuart Little, New Yorker) lived in Brooklyn for many years. Robert McCloskey (Time of Wonder, Blueberries for Sal, Make Way for Ducklings) lived in Maine for many years.

  45. Too bad they don’t know that Islesboro is actually in Waldo County.
Missed that in the first round of corrections, I guess.

  46. How about Rene Rancourt of Lewiston that sings both National Anthems at the Boston Bruins home games

  47. Mildred Elizabeth Sisk, aka “Axis Sally” born in  Portland, Maine.  Captured in Berlin at the end of WWII, tried and convicted of treason.  Be proud Maine!

  48. Paul Sullivan, pianist and more.  E.B. White Charlotte’s Web author.  Also female carpenter on Green Acres show lives in Blue Hill area.

  49. I’m not sure why this information is newsworthy. If you live in one of the communities listed you know who the famous residents are.  If you don’t live in one of those communities you don’t need to know what famous person is living there.  One of the reasons the famous love Maine is we allow them to live normal lives  without being bothered.

  50. I know a couple of those people haven’t been in Maine in years.  Others would best be classified as “tourists.”  BDN really stretching, here?

  51. What about author Stuart Woods lives on MDI according to his jacket blurbs and website.  Probably keeps such a low profile was missed by the BDN.

  52. You forgot Linda Greenlaw! Writer of “The Hungry Ocean,” “All Fisherman are Liars,” and many others…lives out on Isle au Haut year rounds!

  53. Why are you wasting space by providing information about celebrities? Almost none of the postings are really news.
