There are two stories coming out of New Hampshire. The big story is Mitt Romney. The bigger one is Ron Paul.

Romney won a major victory with nearly 40 percent of the vote, 16 points ahead of No. 2. The split among his challengers made the outcome even more decisive. Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich were diminished by distant, lower-tier finishes. Rick Perry got less than 1 percent.

And Jon Huntsman, who staked everything on New Hampshire, came in a weak third with less than half of Romney’s vote. He practically moved to the state — and then received exactly one-sixth of the vote in a six-man contest. Where does he go from here?

But the bigger winner was Ron Paul. He got 21 percent in Iowa, 23 in New Hampshire, the only candidate other than Romney to do well with two very different electorates, one more evangelical and socially conservative, the other more moderate and fiscally conservative.

Paul commands a strong, energetic, highly committed following. And he is unlike any of the other candidates. They’re out to win. He admits he doesn’t see himself in the Oval Office. They’re one-time self-contained enterprises aiming for the White House. Paul is out there to build a movement that will long outlive this campaign.

Paul is less a candidate than a “cause,” to cite his election-night New Hampshire speech. Which is why that speech was the only one by a losing candidate that was sincerely, almost giddily joyous. The other candidates had to pretend they were happy with their results.

Paul was genuinely delighted with his, because, after a quarter-century in the wilderness, he’s within reach of putting his cherished cause on the map. Libertarianism will have gone from the fringes — those hopeless, pathetic third-party runs — to a position of prominence in a major party.

Look at him now. He’s getting prime-time air, interviews everywhere and, most important, respect for defeating every Republican candidate but one. His goal is to make himself leader of the opposition — within the Republican Party.

He is Jesse Jackson of the 1980s, who represented a solid, African-American, liberal-activist constituency to which, he insisted, attention had to be paid by the Democratic Party. Or Pat Buchanan (briefly) in 1992, who demanded — and gained — on behalf of social conservatives a significant role at a convention that was supposed to be a simple coronation of the moderate George H.W. Bush.

No one remembers Bush’s 1992 acceptance speech. Everyone remembers Buchanan’s fiery and disastrous culture-war address. At the Democratic conventions, Jackson’s platform demands and speeches drew massive attention, often overshadowing his party’s blander nominees.

Paul won’t quit before the Republican convention in Tampa. He probably will not do well in South Carolina or Florida, but with volunteers even in the more neglected caucus states, he will be relentlessly collecting delegates until Tampa.

His goal is to have the second-most delegates, a position of leverage from which to influence the platform and demand a prime-time speaking slot — before deigning to support the nominee at the end. The early days of the convention, otherwise devoid of drama, could very well be all about Paul.

The Democratic convention will be a tightly scripted TV extravaganza extolling the Prince and his wise and kindly rule. The Republican convention could conceivably feature a major address by Paul calling for the abolition of the Fed, FEMA and the CIA; American withdrawal from everywhere; acquiescence to the Iranian bomb — and perhaps even Paul’s opposition to a border fence lest it be used to keep Americans in.

Not exactly the steady, measured, reassuring message a Republican convention might wish to convey. For libertarianism, however, it would be a historic moment: mainstream recognition at last.

Put aside your own view of libertarianism or of Paul himself. I see libertarianism as an important critique of the Leviathan state, not a governing philosophy. As for Paul himself, I find him a principled, somewhat wacky, highly engaging eccentric. But regardless of my feelings or yours, the plain fact is that Paul is nurturing his movement toward visibility and legitimacy.

Paul is 76. He knows he’ll never enter the promised land. But he’s clearing the path for son Rand, his better placed (Senate versus House), more moderate, more articulate successor.

And it matters not whether you find amusement in libertarians practicing dynastic succession. What Paul has already wrought is a signal achievement, the biggest story yet of this presidential campaign.

  1. I try to tell my friends that the choices available today are chicken or chicken.  White meat or dark meat.  There is really very little difference anymore between the two parties idealogically.  They both support Big Government, except Ron Paul.  They both support endless Wars, except Ron Paul.  They both want to tell you what to eat, drink, teach your children, put in your body etc.  I am an adult and can make these decisions on my own without the interference of Washington D.C.  If you love your country like I do, the choice is simple.  The Status Quo must Go!!!  Ron Paul 2012 and beyond!

  2.  Dr. Paul labels himself as a constitutionalist, not as a libertarian. Libertarian conotes someone that is on the fringe and is half baked. That word should not be interpreted as such, but it is. In it’s true form it means freedom, and in that context it is a good description of Dr. Paul.  He is the only candidate that is risking his life for something he believes in. He doesn’t want to be president because he lusts for power (like many or possibly all the other candidates) he wants to be president to save this country. Obama is becoming a dictator, and has decided it is important for him to enforce his agenda and personal views on the rest of the country. The true role of the president is actually to be a steward of the country. It is his (or hers) responsibility to implement the wishes of the people, not personal wishes. Dr. Paul has vision, and realizes that our constitutional raights are being chipped away at..recently “posse comitatus” the law barring US military to be used as police. Another recently lost constitutional loss was the 4th amendment dealing with a citizens right to trial and indefinte detention. Many do not see what is going on with the big picture..but the Obama administration  actually requested that that particular passage be written into the denfense appropriations bill, and then when he signed it, he said that he had reservations about signing it due to that passage. I call that..to steal a term from South Park..SHENANNIGANS.
I thank God that there is still someone as selfless and brave as Dr. Paul, out there defending us from those who would steal our freedoms, as well as our treasury (the Federal Reserve) If you worry and or care about not living under a dictatorship, I highly recommend supporting the only candidate that has ALL of our interests at heart, not a personal agenda.

  3. I absolutely support Ron Paul.  I have read several of his books, and especially recommend “Liberty Defined” which simply and clearly lists various points of his platform and beliefs.  I also  recommend people read a beginning book on Austrian economics like “Economics in One Lesson” which is straightforward as well. I can definitely say I have been so disillusioned with both parties that I wouldn’t have been voting for either Obama or the other nominees put forward by the GOP.

    1. What exactly qualifies the libertarian party as half baked and fringe? Because they are not manipulated by corporations like the dems and republicans? Please.

You do know that the left and right are controlled by the same factions?
Divide and conquer? Proof? Obama continuing the bush agenda.

But I am with you as far as dr. Paul goes.

    2. And because Dr. Paul is so brave and sticking his neck out, all we can do is support him and get him elected.  We the people decide who becomes president, not the media.

  5.  As much as we can assume that Charles Krauthammer has his OWN agenda regarding Ron Paul, he will most likely become more and MORE crotchety and personal in his diatribes as Ron Paul keeps growing his support. The status quo in DC is going to be the status NO when Ron Paul brings his housecleaning crew into the beltway in 2013.

It can’t happen soon enough Mr. Krauthammer..

    News Now:

CIA  CHIEF ENDORSES REP. RON PAUL

    Northbrook,
    IL (PRWEB)

    Top Republican presidential
contender U.S. Rep. Ron Paul has been by endorsed former head of the CIA’s “Bin
Laden Unit” Michael Scheuer, reports Revolution PAC. In his endorsement,
Scheuer backs Paul’s longstanding non-interventionist foreign policy views and
warns of bankruptcy and increased hostility toward Americans both at home and
abroad should current bipartisan foreign adventurism continue.

    Scheuer writes, “Any other
Republican candidate or a reelected Obama will keep lying to Americans by
claiming that we are being attacked because of our liberties, gender-equality
laws, and elections rather than because of Washington’s constant intervention
in the Islamic world. This now two-decade-old lie – which is abetted by most of
the media – has hidden from Americans the fact that all of the would-be
Islamist attackers who have been captured in this country were motivated by the
invasion of Iraq, U.S. support for Israel, or some other U.S. government action
    in the Muslim world.”

    A 22-year CIA veteran, Georgetown
University Security Studies adjunct professor and bestselling author, Scheuer
blasts the Obama administration’s reckless nation-building efforts in the
Middle East and sounds the alarm on a Western first strike on Iran.

    “Indeed, Washington, Tel Aviv,
and London are already conducting a lethal, covert-action war inside Iran which
is killing Iranian nuclear scientists and destroying nuclear-related
facilities, as well as trying to goad Tehran into reacting with violence and
thereby give the West a casus belli,” continues Scheuer. “Such a war would be a
financial and military disaster for the United States, and would be watched
with glee by Russian and Chinese leaders who — while their countries would lose
some trade with Iran during a war — would applaud another U.S. self-inflicted
would that further erodes the already failing economy that is the base of
    American power.”

    Scheuer notes that throughout the
Republican primary campaign, Rep. Paul has raised more money from active duty
military members than all other candidates, including Barack Obama.

    “What we have not fully
accomplished in eight centuries cannot possibly be attained in Egypt,
Afghanistan, or elsewhere in the Muslim world in 6 weeks, 6 months, or six
years, not least because none of those places separate church from state,”
asserts Scheuer. “Dr. Paul’s precise use of history and commonsense exposes the
exorbitantly costly effort to build democracies in the Islamic world for what
it is; namely, Washington throwing money down the drain for a cause that is
impossibly lost from the start and one that will involve us in wars where we
    have no interests.”

  9. The article started right and fair, but drifted into a rant of again unelectability. Wont do well in SC ? polling at 20%  with a week to go, so I wouldn’t be so sure. I’m not only voting for him , but am out beating the pavement for him and giving him my hard earned money and I’m in my fifties and also running for office on a similar platform of constitutional and limited government. It’s what has to be done to bring this nation back under the principles of the founders and our constitution. Ron Paul 2012 and beyond.

  10. If Robert “Mr. Republican” Taft had died before Ron Paul was born, he would have reincarnated as Ron Paul.  Looks like Jefferson got first crack, though.

I just watched this amazing 5-minute speech by Ron Paul where he literally predicts an entire decade of events on the house floor and it blew my mind:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGDisyWkIBM

Ron Paul – Predictions in Due Time.  Freaking incredible.

    1. Over the years, Ron Paul has made many correct predictions.  It is too bad it is taking the fall of America for people to finally listen to him.  Had we been doing so all along, I have no doubt in my mind that America would still be the powerhouse she used to be, today.   Remember what it was like before NAFTA came along? . . .  Before America before we  began fighting illegal, endless, no-win wars?  Remember when pennies were made of copper and silver money really was silver?  Today a silver dime is worth over $3.00.  What does that tell us?  Yet, it has been Ron Paul all along, warning us of the evils of the Federal Reserve and their fiat, Keynesian banking practices that have devalued the dollar.  The 1913 dollar is now worth about $0.05.  You can thank inflation and the Federal Reserve (which Dr. Paul has relentlessly tried to expose over the years) for that.  We so need to put Ron Paul in the White House to help us save our Nation, if it is not too late to do it already.

      1. Derek, I just gave you a thumbs up for your statement and the counter actually deducted, rather than added it.  I wonder what the deal is with that?  Has it happened to anyone else on this site?

          1. I may have.  Hmmm, interesting though, I didn’t know it would deduct for a double click.  Thanks for the heads up.  I will be more careful next time.

    2. It’s staggering and impressive that Dr. Paul has had the foresight to predict.  We owe him our support and gratitude, as he will go down in history for being one of the greatest presidents who came to our defense in our great time of need.  I’m voting for him.

  11. Libertarianism, is something both the left and the right can get behind.  It’s all about self liberty with minimal government involvement.  All the talking heads that scream at us every day would go away because there would be nothing left to scream about.  Those two mega parties are cut from the same cloth.

    Ron Paul 2012

  12. Ron Paul’s views on individual liberty, freedom, and small limited government are as close to those of our founding fathers as any of us will probably see.  Ron Paul 2012.

  13. I dont even like Ron Paul, but he’s leaps and bounds better than Romney or Obama

    I will be supporting Santorum

      1. Think about this for a minute: Ron Paul, like most politicians in active campaign mode, would prefer that people look upon him as he is from the moment he declared. In order to get a true picture of a candidate, however, one needs to put “today” aside and look at the whole picture.

Mr. Paul appears to be a straight-talking, straight-shooting, plain spoken man who speaks from the heart. You have to remember, though, that he is in campaign mode and even benign grandfatherly types can and do lie.

A few you tube videos today cannot and do not absolve him from the racist words he used in papers for which he refuses to take responsibility. The last time voters accepted someone at face value, look at what we ended up with for a governor. Don’t visit this upon us on a national level.

        1. Ron Paul has stood up for our Constitution since day one, whether campaigning or not.   And even if Ron Paul doesn’t win, he will have won anyway, because he has put emphasis on our Constitution, the rights we are losing, the damnation of the Federal Reserve, he has shown a light on the illegal wars we’ve been fighting over the past 10 years, etc.  If Ron Paul doesn’t win the White House,  I think America has a whole will lose because non of the other Candidates will ever fight for our Sovereignty the way Dr. Paul does.  Dr. Paul denied writing those papers you speak of from 20 years ago and through his actions, I have no reason not to believe him.  The Media can’t come up with any real dirt on Dr. Paul so they have to use whatever they can find to taint his image even if they have to search the archives for morsels.  You can call Ron Paul anything you like, but I assure you, he is the most honest Candidate running for office.  You should listen to him directly rather than listening to the Media’s twisted version of what Dr. Paul does and says.   Go back 5, 10, 15, 20 years, you will see that Ron Paul has always defended this Nation both in word and Deed and has been consistent in his views.  Ron Paul will be getting my vote for sure.

          1. Oh? And exactly what is it about our Constitution that Ron Paul doesn’t understand?  I am beginning to think Ron Paul is one of the few Representatives we have that has even read it.  And I’m sure he is the ONLY Candidate running that will uphold and defend it, unlike the others who will try to sidestep and destroy it in favor of the NAU.

  14. I think you all need a reality check.  The overwhelming majority of American women do not support Ron Paul or his ideals.  That is more than half the electorate and the reason why Paul will never be a viable candidate or even a blip on the cultural radar screen.  Why? Because his “individual liberty” crap does not apply to women. A gynecologist with no respect for women. What a disgusting POS.

    1. As if the only way a candidate can respect women is by being pro-choice? As a woman, I find that insulting. The right to abortion is not feminine liberty. In my view, Roe v Wade has halted the feminist movement in its tracks which means it is increasingly difficult for women to achieve truly meaningful advances.

      1. Yes, I’m sure you’re a woman because you say you are. You are a Ron Paul supporter who believes the government has the right to tell you how to live your life, right? That would seem to be a contradiction. Be that as it may, what is your opinion of Ron Paul’s views on sexual harassment, young lady? Take your time, I realize you will have to look it up. LOL

    2. Your stats are wrong.  I’m a woman and I know plenty of women to support Dr. Paul.  If you look at his rallies, speaking engagements, etc.  You see plenty of women, and not just the youth voters.

  15. If the people of this Nation really wanted to resurrect our Constitution and restore our Liberties, they would unanimously vote for Ron Paul.   Dr. Paul is the ONLY Candidate running on either side of the Isle whose sole purpose for running for President is to first awaken us and remind us of what we are getting ready to lose, then hopefully put him in office where he can go to work nullifying past Executive Orders that don’t fall in line with our Constitution, firing about 40 Czars, bringing our troops homes, and repairing our budget by restructuring our Federal Government’s role in the people’s lives.  If for some reason, Ron Paul does not win the White House, I doubt our ‘elected’ officials will ever be able to suppress the “Ron Paul message” of renewing our freedoms.  We have a chance for the real deal.  We should take advantage of it and elect Ron Paul in 2012.  The whole World would benefit from a Paul Presidency.

  16. Charles Krauthammer is incorrect.  Ron Paul IS in this to win, as evidenced by the fact that he has accepted campaign donations and would not waste anyone’s money if he had no intention to win.  In fact, Ron Paul has stated clearly that he is in this to win.  So, Mr. Krauthammer, saying it does not make it so. He is much more than a cause. He’s our next president.

    Ron Paul 2012!

  17. Principled?  His main remarkable achievement is burying his bigoted, prejudiced past and past writings.  Hardly admirable.
