BANGOR, Maine — A Maine State Prison inmate has filed a lawsuit demanding that the prison stop giving inmates padlocks for their lockers.
In a complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Bangor, Gerard Landry says he suffered head and facial injuries last September after being assaulted by another prisoner who used a padlock as a weapon. The padlocks are issued to prisoners to secure their personal belongings in lockers.
Maine Public Broadcasting Network said Landry is the third inmate to file a federal lawsuit over the prison’s use of padlocks.
Judy Plummer of the Maine Department of Corrections says the prison plans keep its padlock policy in place so inmates can safeguard their property.

Stay out of prison…
Pretty simple.
Get more paying jobs in Maine and they will stay out of prison
Good luck with that, every state is hurting……
Jobs has nothing to do with it.
there are 49 other states that are in the same position as Maine.
You know as well as i do with jobs crime goes down less jobs mean more crime its happen in the past
The sentence for this man’s crime was a stay in prison, where he would have no freedom. The crime that landed him there may not have been all that serious, I don’t know.
The sentence, however, was not to be assaulted (in any numbers of whay in which prisoners can and are assaulted). If we’re gonig to allow corporal punishment to exist openly in prisons, then maybe we should just start sentencing people to those punishments and get it over with.
Kinda like that guy asking to get lashed. He know’s he’ll probably get lashed – and worse – in prison anway. Wouldn’t it just be cheaper, quicker and easier to do it?
And since when do prisoners have possessions?
Since the bleeding hearts think criminals have more rights than their victims.
Besides soap on a rope and toothpaste, why should any inmate have possessions that need locking up…..they are in prison for a reason….Crazy….
I still buy soap on a rope, old habit from my Navy days.
Give ’em all Uzi’s and Bowie knives for a day and let all the guards take a much deserved day off.
But it needs an element of fairness, I nominate you to referee…
….
So is being stupid. Stupidity got them there in the first place.
….
I am too…LOL..
….
Always take the Dr_seriously……
….
What is it that Ron White says about stupid?
You can’t fix stupid.
OH thank god someone answered that! thank you, thank you, thank you!!
I say let them keep the padlocks. Is it safe? NO. Is it prudent? YES.
Everyone has one, that makes it equal. Now if you use it as a weapon, your little privacy toy is gone, and so is your stuff. And by the way, your sentence is extended, without your stuff being secure.
They are being punished. If they want to out on parole, then they will act accordingly. Unlike Forrest Gump, Life isn’t a box of chocolates. You got yourself in this mess, now it’s time to get yourself out.
Either that, or always have a sock in your pocket. Punishment isn’t designed to be a good time. Some can be rehabilitated, some cannot, it’s up to the Me. Dept. of Corrections to determine which is which.
assign em combination codes instead of padlocks.
The only problem with that is that it would require changing over every locker in the system…where does that money come from?
Who would have thought there would be thieves in prison? Now they know what it feels like to be a victim, and they don’t like it much
Its called a correction system, people, and some people learn a lesson. I am sick of this society being so judgemental and cruel. But by the Grace of God, there go I!! Let the one without sin cast the first stone. Who did Jesus spend time with when He was on Earth?
stop reading comments then.
many people would not say in public what they will say anonymously. I will say what I think here, or anywhere, to anyone. Prisoners are not “dirt”.
But you say that’s where they came from. You need a history lesson about the bible that you speak of. An eye for an eye. Or do you choose to leave that out.
Yes, an eye for an eye is from the Bible…the Old Testament. It is a very well-known verse . Check out what Jesus said in the New Testament…look up:Matthew 5:38-42 and Luke 6:27-31. I encourage you to read it.
I prefer the original. The new one has brought us to this mess.
Just looked up Landry. Pretty extensive criminal record. looks like a career theif. Probably just wants to get rid of the locks to make his job easier.
Hope the beating you took hurt Gerald ol’ boy. Probably the only satisfaction your victims will get.
the pot caling the kettle black
This is a very funny story.
I bet those mugshot photos of smiling criminals we see in the Bangor Daily News everyday are not smiling when they go to prison and they see a padlock swirling in the air by another prisoner … BING!..BONG! where’s ur smile now?
Wow, something we agree on.
The prisoner is correct. There should never be the opportunity for a prisoner to be able to use anything as a weapon such as this. The lockers should have had integral locks to begin with. The insistence of continuing with a policy which has already been shown to be flawed and a simple corrective action is available is ludicrous. Change the damn lockers before someone gets seriously hurt and the taxpayers are faced with a multimillion dollar lawsuit.
They will just use the pool balls that the bleeding hearts say they have a right to. The only ones I feel bad for are the ones who are in prison for victimless crimes. By the way, put a bar of soap in a sock and hit your pillow with it. Anything that’s not welded down is a weapon in prison.
Gerard Landry complains he got beat up. Look at mr innocent’s record:
four assaults
burglary
unlawful possession of a firearm
terrorizing
various thefts
fugitive from justice
larceny

Is that a bit redundant… seeing that they are locked up.
