POLAND — A Saturday morning fire along Upper Range Pond left a family homeless, Fire Chief Mark Bosse said.
“They were at home, having breakfast, and they smelled smoke,” Bosse said. “They thought it was actually the remnants of breakfast on the stove, but then they went back and opened the bedroom door and the room was on fire.”
The fire was reported at 10:30 a.m. at 187 Cleve Tripp Road, Bosse said.
A father and two children escaped the blaze, but the entire house — a single-story, wood-frame modular home — and two dogs were lost in the fire.
Bosse declined to identify the family. Town assessing records say the property belongs to the heirs of Barbara Carle and Jacqueline Lemm of 108 North Raymond Road, Poland.
“They had fire coming out of the windows when crews arrived,” Bosse said.
The father told firefighters he tried to extinguish the flames.
“He tried to throw water on it, but he said every time he did, the fire just kept getting bigger,” Bosse said. “They lost pretty much everything.”
About 35 firefighters responded, including crews from Mechanic Falls, Minot, Auburn, New Gloucester, Gray, Raymond, Casco and Oxford, the chief said.
He said he did not know what caused the fire, which was under investigation. State fire marshals were expected to be at the scene Monday.

That’s truly a shame. Sincerely extend them the best.
My parent’s last home to go that way was a similar modular. it served them well, but the ‘balsa wood’ interior went incredibly fast.
Wow…tons of compassion for this family who lost all the have to fire…which is an appropriate response. Yet you made insults towards the single mother’s family who also lost everything in a fire.
Is your name miss-spelled?
it vs en?
thats rude.
Yes, too bad about this family. Also if it had been home belonging to a single unwed mother of three children it would have been a bigger story. Both cases are terrible, one just happens to be a headline.
both stories were placed on the home page of the news site. you have no point here other than sour grapes about women.
boo hiss. go to your corner.
But which story headline remains in bold print with a large photo? Then ask yourself which story is more recent? I have nothing against women, it just seems being a single young mother with multiple children makes for a better story in the BDN’s view. Your, “boo hiss. go to your corner.” comment wasn’t needed and makes you sound overly hostile.
if you had read the comments on the other story (before they got deleted) you would not think it was I who was overly hostile.
ok. timeout over. you can come out and play.
;)
Thank you for the reply.
Once again, they were an observation, not an insult. Nobody yet has told me where all her relatives are and how they are helping. Besides, no one HAS to give an ‘appropriate’ response to someone else’s definition of the term. K? :)
Look, it magically reappeared!
Odd, that.
An observation, not an insult. I have yet to hear how all of her relatives are helping her, which cannot be called an insult.
Also, I don’t comment according to someone else’s definition of ‘appropriate’, only the rules. :)
(lets see if this one sticks)
