HAMPDEN, Maine — An Aroostook County man was arrested Wednesday afternoon after a short pursuit on Interstate 95, according to police.

Hampden Police Chief Joe Rogers said authorities were sent to Dysart’s restaurant to “check on the well-being” of Mark Gilbert, 49, of Easton.

Rogers said Hampden police had received a teletype from Aroostook County that someone believed to be a family member had expressed concern about Gilbert’s well-being.

“All we get is the information about the driver and the vehicle he’s operating to check to make sure that he’s OK,” said Rogers, adding that it also gives police probable cause to stop the vehicle.

When police saw Gilbert’s vehicle, he took off and headed north on I-95, Rogers said. The pursuit lasted about a mile until Gilbert pulled over and was taken into custody by Officer Bill Miller.

Rogers said that Gilbert’s vehicle was not traveling at a high rate of speed.

Gilbert was taken to Penobscot County Jail and charged with eluding an officer, a Class C offense. He later was released on bail.

Gilbert’s first court appearance is scheduled for March 15.

    1. I totally agree with you. A pursuit that went a mile at acceptable speed really constitute a ticket under Maine statue? If he was under duress was that ticket necessary? Let me guess, they towed the car…did he get to talk to a crisis worker….did the officer that gave the ticket take human kindness and understanding 101…..

  1. So the guy did nothing wrong but he cops chased him?  All because someone was concerned. Meanwhile folks dealing drugs all over the state the police know who they are and where they live but can not do anything about them?

  2. This guy has needed help for a long time…his family should have done something when he was threatening suicide last week, the week before and week before that. He has been all over facebook and his obsession of things he cant have is out of control. He has need help for a very long time and it is too bad that it came to something as simple as this to get attention.  Thank god he didnt get hurt or hurt someone else and I only hope his family will talk him into getting some much needed help.

  3. What’s wrong with the police in Hampden??   The man was leaving before the cops got there and is driving away.  How in hell was he suppose to know that they were after him to check him out because someone called??  He wasn’t traveling at a high rate of speed.  He wasn’t  eluding officer, he was driving back home.

  4. I know the guy personally and will not get into the details of his personal life on here. I only wonder why a story like this made the paper. This has only added to his emarrassment. Please be kind with your comments. I’m sure he is reading them.
