BRUNSWICK, Maine — A delusional Brunswick man with schizophrenia has been missing for more than two weeks and his worried family is asking the public for help.
Jason Reil, 33, was last seen by his father on the morning of Jan. 12.
Jason Reil had stopped by Doug Reil’s Brunswick home the night before and said he hadn’t been sleeping or taking his medications. He also was delusional and began talking about government conspiracies, his father said Sunday afternoon.
Doug Reil persuaded his son to spend the night, but Jason Reil woke up at 6 a.m. and again began talking about the conspiracies. Doug Reil asked his son to promise to call his doctor and to take his medications, but then Jason Reil said he had to go for a walk.
“I said, promise me you’ll call me when you get back from your walk,” Doug Reil said.
That was 17 days ago. Family members have not seen or heard from Jason Reil since.
“When I didn’t hear from him, I began to get really worried,” Doug Reil said.
Jason Reil walked out the door that morning wearing khakis, a green pullover sweater and leather shoes. He left his jacket and gloves at his father’s house and left his phone and keys at his apartment on Federal Street in Brunswick.
The family filed a missing persons report with the Brunswick Police Department a few days after Jason Reil vanished.
Doug Reil said that although his son has been known to “take off” before for a day or two, he always lets someone know.
“He’ll call somebody and let them know he’s OK,” Reil said, adding that he also is disabled. “He’s always checking in on me.”
Jason Reil is 6 feet tall, has shaved light brown hair and brown eyes. He has small scars over his eyebrow and a dragon tattoo on his left forearm. He also has scars on his wrists.
According to Doug Reil, his son had recently been on an upward swing in his life.
“Prior to him stopping his medication, he was doing really well,” Reil said. “He seemed to have this great positive attitude about life. He was involved in helping out at local soup kitchens. He seemed really positive, really up.”
But Reil stopped taking his medications around Christmas, which has historically been a hard time of year for him. Twice in the past, he has tried to commit suicide around that time.
Doug Reil said that although his son has been a danger to himself, he has never known him to be a threat to anyone else.
“I’ve never seen him hurt anybody in my life. Never, ever,” Reil emphasized. “He’s a pretty timid person. He just keeps to himself.”

The obvious problem with searching for a paranoid person, is that the person fears that people are searching for them. Unfortunately, we are now in a position where we actually are searching for this man. His delusion has become reality (which begs the question – is he actually delusional, now that the government is searching for him?). I hope they connect with him before he or someone else gets hurt and I feel for his father – this must be hard.

I tried to do that Mike but that site is really designed for the police… it asks for dental record and fringerprint information that only they would have… Thanks for the tip though, you can guarantee I’ll be asking the BPD to get all over that.
I know this doesn’t help your current situation but there is a good book called Gut and Psychology Syndrome. It may be worth looking at for schizophrenia. All sorts of treatments can help.

Seriously??? Why are we hearing about this now???? He has schizophrenia (sp) and is not taking his meds. He is on the loose and assuming he is very paranoid. Why did they wait so long to report him missing??? They can be very dangerous when confronted and will fight their demons to the point that they can and will hurt someone. Everyone is an enemy to them. I know this for a fact because someone in my family had this.
Did you read the article? It said that the family reported him missing within a few days. The family of the missing person does not decide when to write a news article about the situation.
As a relative of Jason, I can tell you that he has never been a violent person even when off his meds. I am not saying that he is not capable, mind you. I know that he is certainly struggling with his demons right now. Our family is extremely worried about him, and it feels as though the Brunswick PD is not putting the effort towards this case that they would or have in the past towards others. It was reported by his father, but it took a family member to get it on the news… WMTW broadcast it Friday night on the 11 o’clock news, but the others haven’t. To my knowledge, this is the first newspaper to write about it.
Please you keep getting everyone as wild and excited as you can… We need all the publicity we can get. Let’s find him so he is no longer a danger to himself or anyone else. If anyone has any information don’t hesitate to come forward… -TY

Most schizophrenics are non violent towards others. Just because your family member got violent, doesn’t mean Jason is. If he had violent tendencies, it would have been all over the news within hours.
So many missing people lately. I feel for their families and hope they are all found safe and sound without anyone getting hurt.
To find this man, maybe we should think like him? Where would you go if you thought the government was after you? Isnt there a naval base near brunswick? Try checking to see if any pranks were done and dismissed as kids play. Maybe he tried to stick it to em or something. People in that mind frame can stick to things theyre comfortable with. Are their any houses or businesses he went to that are now vacant? I hope this man is found safe, and can get the help he needs.
