BANGOR, Maine — A former postal worker was sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court to three months in prison for stealing nearly 3,000 pain pills intended for veterans in eastern Maine.
Christopher McBride, 39, of Bangor admitted to stealing the prescription medications in 2010 while working at the Eastern Maine Processing and Distribution Center in Hampden. He pleaded guilty in September to theft of mail by a postal employee.
In addition to prison time, U.S. District Judge John Woodcock sentenced McBride to two years of supervised release after he completes his prison term. The judge also ordered the defendant to pay $221.50 in restitution to the Department of Veterans Affairs.
McBride, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps after he graduated from Bangor High School in 1990, became “profoundly addicted” to Vicodin in January 2010 after it was prescribed for him by his dentist, Woodcock said before imposing the sentence.
“The defendant was willing to deprive his fellow veterans of the pain medication they needed to support his own habit,” the judge said of McBride. “He stole a staggering amount of pills in 21 separate thefts.”
Assistant U.S. Attorney Todd Lowell, who prosecuted the case, recommended that McBride serve five months in prison.
Defense attorney Joseph Baldacci of Bangor urged Woodcock to impose no prison time but to instead sentence his client to six months of house arrest. That would have allowed McBride to continue working at the Getchell Agency, which operates group homes for people with disabilities and is owned by McBride’s aunt Rena Getchell.
“I ask for leniency and forgiveness,” McBride told Woodcock. “I am very, very sorry.”
Woodcock rejected home confinement, citing his responsibility to impose a sentence that would act as a deterrent to others who might be tempted to commit a similar crime.
“A sentence of mere home confinement is not what people fear,” he told McBride. “Jail is what people fear. I would not be doing my job if I did not impose a prison term.”
Woodcock ordered McBride to report to a facility to be designated by the U.S. Bureau of Prisons on March 2.
McBride was the second postal worker from the Hampden facility to be sentenced for being involved in the plan to steal drugs.
Heather Buck, 40, of Brewer was sentenced in October to two weeks in prison and fined $500 for helping McBride divert packages. She pleaded guilty to the federal misdemeanor of obstruction of the mail.
McBride, who admitted that he stole prescription drugs for his own use, and Buck worked together at the facility.
The investigation that led to the charges began in September 2010 after the U.S. Postal Inspection Service received information that veterans living in eastern Maine had not received prescription drugs that had been mailed to them, according to court documents. Between June 11, 2010, and Sept. 3, 2010, 15 parcels containing narcotics were reported missing by the Veterans Affairs Office of the Inspector General.
Surveillance cameras were set up at the Hampden facility. Buck was caught on video opening a package containing a book on Sept. 12, 2010, according to information in the prosecution version of events to which she pleaded guilty.
McBride was recorded on Sept. 15 taking “two white parcels from the mail stream and placing them in his backpack,” according to the prosecution version of events to which he pleaded guilty. Further surveillance in September, October and November captured McBride taking several additional packages containing prescription drugs. McBride admitted to stealing 2,840 pills from the mail.
Buck faced up to six months in prison and a fine of up to $5,000 on the federal misdemeanor charge. McBride faced up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

Light sentence for heavy drugs.
“McBride, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps after he graduated from Bangor High School in 1990, became “profoundly addicted” . . .
– there is more to this story that needs to be told –
“He stole a staggering amount of pills in 21 separate thefts.”
-probably for personal use and resale –
3 months what a joke!
Indeed, why bother——-just let him walk. Ridiculous.
WOW
WOW – stealing narcotics, having an assistant help him steal the drugs and gets only three months – I ought to work for the goverment.
That’s nothing. Some guy in the gummint allowed guns to go to Mexican drug dealers, lost 1/2 billion dollars of your money on a solar company, and hired a bunch of tax cheats…
Don’t be that guy. Don’t be the conservative counterpart to the ID that feels the need to talk about religious nuts and the evil wealthy. with every post, no matter what the topic.. Your better then that.
Don’t be that guy.
Sorry! Not enough… They are Postal workers, responsible for mail delivery.
This is a violation of trust in so many ways it’s not even funny. This guy could spend more than 3 months just listing the ways this is wrong. Someone paid off someone here.
Have the laws been changed regarding stealing mail? I remember hearing yrs ago about a guy that robbed a general store, turned out it was a small Post office too. I think the dudes still in the stir. Bet he would of liked to have a Baldacci reppin him
Should have just made him take all of the stolen meds, at one time! See how bad he wants ’em then.
The guy in Houlton who did the same thing, got no jail time….
I was thinking the same thing, but he was a 30 year man.
And this is the Hampden mails sorting facility that people want to keep open??????
do you realize that closing the hampden plant because of this will cause horrendous problems? I honestly think you need to read up on the USPS. The mail is sorted by the hampden plant. Then its sent to the annexes in the bangor/ old town area. Then the mail sent to the annexes is sorted by each postman to suit their route. then its delivered. Getting rid of the hampden plant would mean you would get your mail MANY days later than you do now. He should have gotten a hell of a lot more than 3 months though. Holy hell
Our veterans…some of them in the end stages of cancer from Agent Orange exposure. Did he have ANY idea what it is like for a cancer patient to not get their pain meds???
Three months is disgusting.
Did I say veterans?
What a joke! McBride stole prescription pain medication from veterans that were left to suffer, McBride “I’m very, very sorry”. Woodcock ” I wouldn’t be doing my job if I did not impose a prision term” he barely gave him enough sentence to secure his position as a judge! Woodcock imposed a three month prision sentence on someone that spent 6 months stealing those prescriptions from Veterans that suffered through a six month period without pain meds. The resitution of $221.50 to the Department of Veterans Affairs will probably cover the postage cost of the 21 packages that were stolen. I very highly doubt the restitution will cover the cost of 2,840 pain pills. According to my calculations, rounded to the nearest penny, that would be .08 cents per pill. McBride and Buck should have been brought before a jury that consisted of 12 Veterans that went without their pain meds for a period of 6 months. I’d dare say they would have given Buck and McBride both what they were facing…….six months in prision and a fine of up to $5,000.00 for Buck and five years and a fine of up to $250,000.00 for McBride. Woodcock “Jail is what people fear”……..hopefully the clients at Auntie Rena’s group home are not on any prescription medication that McBride has any access to.
“Hopefully the clients at Auntie Rena’s group home are not on any prescription medication that McBride has any access to.” – I wonder
Thank you for your rage against Woodcock. I am a 100% disabled vet who receives no less than 7 meds a month through the mail. I have also ordered meds that never came. That doesen’t really bother me as much as the Slap in the face Woodcock gave All of us vets when he gave the maggot 3 months. Woodcock has shown nothing but contempt to veterans in the past. (I know because I was there) so why the meaningless 3 months. Hell I could do 3 months on my head and laugh my butt off at Woodcock. Someone got paid off!
What happened to 5 years in jail and $250,000 in fines? This useless Postal Worker stole from sick Veterans. Just for the amount of drugs he stole this Postal Junkie should have received 10 years in prison. The other Postal Junkie received a slap on the wrist too. Guess it is OK to steal Veteran’s drugs from the mail at the Hampden Facility. I wonder how many more Postal Junkies are at the Hampden Facility stealing drugs right now? Ironic they want to keep this obsolete facility open for more thievery from the mails.
Faced 5 years and got 3 months? You’re right it’s not enough. This Dbag brings disgrace to himself and possibly rubs off on Vets who do no wrong. Should get more time but I’m sure there are those who will say something akin to “The poor guy, was addicted himself”, “Lets hope he gets the help he needs”. Well I hope he does, in jail.
I find it very interesting that the postal worker in Houlton got only 30 days and this guys gets 3 months for essentially the same crime – stealing prescriptions from vets! It just goes to show you how messed up the system is as well as how much who you are and who you know plays a role in your fate in Houlton. Makes me rather ashamed to say I used to live there.
“Joseph M. Skehan, 57, Houlton, theft by unauthorized taking or transfer, $350, jail 30 days”……..yup…..too bad this guy’s brother wasn’t a cop!
I wish there were some way of giving him the veterans’ PAIN.
I’d rather give him what he deserves, 5yrs and $250,000. Same for Buck and Woodcock.
I bet his next job will be a Walmart greeter 8 bucks a hour. I bet he was making 20bucks a hour at the PO. Less stress at Walmart.
shame, shame and double shame. Maybe you will get some drug rehabilitation during this time.
once a Marine always Mảrine. some saying eh gúy adn gals. and he đi thí to real Vets. he should have gotten a lot more jail time.
Don’t even try to blame the Marines!
The key word was “own part of the Getchell Agency” because now as a felon
he should not be allowed to be part of any agency that accepts Maine Care funds.
I wonder how many of those clients that the agency serves were missing their
medications? Nothing was said, about getting help for his addiction. That should
always be part of the sentencing process. The system is broke and getting
worse!

I agree, to have this Felon, Junkie around clients medications is outrageous. Many of these clients this agency takes care of, are on various types of medication. Who is to guarantee that this Junkie is not going to steal and sell medications from clients of this agency? Forget it, just give him a job at the Veterans Pharmacy at Togus and be done with it. Talk about enabling a Junkie!
Sorry but don’t let this guy ANYWHERE near Togus, especially the pharmacy.
He doesn’t own part of the Getchell Agency, his aunt does.
3 months, it should have been 3 years! He also should lose all rights, ie. No Vote and be made to break big rocks into little rocks. Maine should also pass legislation to have prisioners police up the roadside in the the spring as “Community Service.” We make it far too easy and overly comfortable for the thieves, murderers, child molesters, Rapists, and criminals in general. Just another example of the Liberalism that has taken over this Country.
I was brought up with the Philosophy that if you wanted to dance, be prepaired to pay the fiddler. Also we were responsible for our actions.
We need to get back to the Basic American values that made this Nation Great. It wasn’t Liberalism but Responsibility and Conservatism.
The judge and lawyer should get 5 years, he should get 20.
It pays to have the money to hire a great lawyer…
are you sure about that?
Bet he used his drug profits to buy his new suit and pay his lawyer. You don’t really think he popped 3000 pills to get high do you? He wouldn’t have been able to stand up, let alone go to work to steal more drugs. He and his partner had a great, profitable drug business going till they got busted. Wonder how much drugs and drug money they still have stashed away till the heat cools down?
My husbands VA little white packages came upon the missing on several occasions…this is possibly the man who stole them. When a disabled veteran has to live the rest of their life on medication because of the ailments they acquired at war it is devistating, you body depends on them to even function at times. When they are late, lost and have to be replaced it takes time. Time that the pain gets to be unbearable. SHAME on anyone who would knowingly steal from our vets, especially a trusted postal employee. :/
The Fedex guy who stole a shotgun got 8 years. Seems a little uneven.
….
A huge betrayal of public trust.
Such a light sentence, for drug violations? Too bad he didn’t get caught with “bath salts” . . .
Man this WHOLE thing is ALL Wrong. Such a travisty of justice by Judge Woodcock. Justice is blind but not impotent. The state Attorney General should appeal Woodcocks sentence and demand he give him a fair sentence.
Judge Woodcock, do you remember Rocky who you sentenced 63 months for distributing marijanna. Well he is still in prison. You treated him mercilessly because of your own personal bias. I’m ashamed of you!
I just pray that this whole story is a HUGE BDN typo!
3 Months ?? That’s it ? WOW not only do USPS workers get exhorbitant paychecks but they are allowed to steal drugs too !
I also wonder how much he stole and didn’t get caught .
John, your right not near enough; that’s not even a day per pill let alone all the needless suffering he caused these veterans. What a shameful shape our country is in.
