Sen. Susan Collins is engaged to be married to Thomas A. Daffron, a longtime Senate senior staff member and a consultant.
A small, private ceremony is expected to take place in Maine this summer at a date still to be determined.
“What matters the most to me is to have my family there and Tom’s family there,” Collins told the Bangor Daily News on Thursday night before heading to Munich for a security conference. “So we’re debating whether we should have it in my hometown of Caribou or Bangor, where I live now … I’m sure it will be a very happy occasion with a lot of joy.”
The two met when they both worked for Sen. Bill Cohen in the late 1970s, but it wasn’t until a few years ago that they developed a personal relationship.
Collins was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1996 after serving as founding executive director of the Center for Family Business at Husson College in Bangor. She previously served in the cabinet of Maine Gov. John McKernan as commissioner of professional and financial regulation and as New England administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration.
Daffron, 73, is the chief operating officer of Jefferson Consulting Group, a Washington, D.C.-based consulting firm, where he oversees day-to-day operations. Before joining the consulting group, Daffron held a variety of senior management positions in government and the private sector.
Originally from New York City, Daffron has served as chief of staff to former Sens. Bill Cohen of Maine and Fred Thompson of Tennessee. He also served as chief of staff to Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and was the national campaign manager for the presidential campaign of Elizabeth Dole.
He also consulted for Collins on all three of her campaigns for U.S. Senate.
Earlier in his career, he worked as a newspaper reporter, editorial writer and public relations executive. He also held the position of senior vice president and chief operating officer for the Baltimore Orioles.
“He’s extraordinarily smart, has a wonderful sense of humor and is a great friend,” Collins said. “Those qualities matter a lot to me.”
While their personal relationship has been kept relatively quiet, the couple recently purchased a four-bedroom townhouse together near Collins’ Capitol Hill office. It serves as Collins’ home away from home when she’s not in Bangor. Daffron uses the basement apartment of the house, said Collins. He also owns a house in Maryland.
“We both really enjoy swimming and kayaking and being at the lake, that’s something we definitely have in common,” Collins said. “We’re both avid readers and care a lot about politics and public service as well. I think we have a great deal in common.”
Collins, 59, was born in Caribou, where both of her parents, Donald and Patricia, each served as mayor. Her father served in both houses of the Maine Legislature. Today, her brothers Sam and Gregg operate a fifth-generation lumber business, S.W. Collins Co., founded by their family in 1844.
During Collins’ time in office, she has led the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, helping to rewrite much of the way the nation’s security agencies operate and share information after the Sept. 11 attacks. She also serves on the Senate Appropriations and Armed Services committees, as well as the Special Committee on Aging.
“You know, one of the difficult parts of my life is that I have to plan even the most important events of my life around the Senate schedule,” Collins said. “So that’s one reason we haven’t set an exact date for the summer, yet. I’m trying to figure out the recess schedule, and when we could get married and go on a honeymoon. It’s not easy to figure out. But it’s obviously very important. I hope people will understand if I take a little time off.”

Well Congratulations and Good for her!
She deserves to be Happy in her life.
All the Best & Good Luck!
Congratulations Susan and Tom … Of course us Caribou folks want you to take time off… You truly deserve many years of happiness together …. Life flies by in the blink of an eye… You have worked so hard for us Susan that you not only deserve a honeymoon but also a fantastic vacation and quiet times at the lake. Cheers to you both :)
Definitely, I agree. Being a U.S. Senator is probably very stressful. I think she deserves time off and to get to live a normal life for a few weeks.
Can you imagine if a CEO was dating one of his staff?
Bosses date employees all the time, nothing novel there. Besides he is the COO of a consulting firm that worked with Collins on her campaigns. She’s not exactly his boss.
read the article. they met when they were both working for Bill Cohen, but only became romantically involved a few years ago. And while Daffron consulted for her campaign, that is not an employee/employer relationship since consulting is often done independently.
You can’t link this to MMA?
Congrats! I think it’s awesome. Any, and everyone in this twisted world deserves a smile. I’m happy for the Senator, she deserves a smile.
CONGRADULATIONS!

Good news is always a great way to start the day. :)
How did I know he would have a sweater tied around his neck? lol.
Congradulations Tom and Sue! Wishing you joy and happiness
“Daffron uses the basement apartment of the house, said Collins.” ha ha ha. I love how she had to mention this. God forbid two grown adults sleep in the same bed before they are married.
ya absoulute shame they have some morals !
Is “consultant” another word for lobbyist?
Ask Kevin Raye.
You have to register to be a lobbyist.
‘ I approve of you’ -BobMarley
Perhaps a double wedding with Barney Frank?
blah….
Susan, we want to wish you and Tom the very best. You certainly deserve the time off for your wedding and honeymoon. Thank you for your past and continued service to the people of Maine. A very big Congratulations!
Congratulations and God Bless!
Much happiness to a humble great lady who has worked hard for the people of Maine.
Yes she has..we are so lucky to have her~
Good luck!
This is great news! With so much bad news in the world, it’s nice to see good news. Best of luck to you both.
Congratulations, Senator Collins! I wish you and your fiance all the best!
I’m so Happy for Both of You….Congrats!
…..
The best story I’ve read in the BDN in a long time. Congratulations best wishes for a beautiful wedding with good weather and a long life together.
In the middle of all of the worlds ugliness, this is really a wonderful thing, I hope all the best for you.
CONGRATS TO SUSAN AND TOM ! I would have to say Susan is one of the few politicians that has truly earned her pay ! She has done a very good job and has done right by the people of Maine ! I give credit when credit is due .
Perhaps nuptials on the Pond in Enfield?
Congratulations!
I am assuming the primary purpose of this marriage is not procreation and am therefore waiting for the anti same sex marriage contingent to equate its validity with that of a long term loving gay couple as unworthy of the legal benefits conferred upon married couples.
That being said, Congratulations to the betrothed and best wishes for a life filled with happiness together.
the union of a man and a woman is normal regardless of age . It is not perverse or deviant but normal.
Exactly. Just like a committed, loving, same-sex couple.
Congradulations Susan and Tom…wishing all the very best…we hope you have many happy years together…
what the hell does she need to go to Germany for a security conference for? Who’s paying for this junket…another example of an out of control government..Repeal the Patriot Act and Obama care..I like Susan, but this is another example of waste…shame on you Susan…glad you finally found the love of your life and maybe it’s time to think about retiring and get some new blood in DC
Congrats
All the time & work she has put into representing Maine, and her first response is to fit her wedding around the Senate schedule! Where do we find a few more folks to send to Washington who put MAINE before ME? Here’s hoping for nothing but the very best for them.
I am worried about the OWS movement and Occupy Bangor activists who might see this wedding as an opportunity to demonstrate outside the church to bring attention to Senator Collins status as a war criminal.
The article mentions a small private ceremony. It does not mention a church.
So nice for her.
If Senator Collins was running in the GOP primary, I think she would be in the lead…!
