WATERVILLE, Maine — The maternal grandfather of a toddler who went missing two months ago is challenging her father to explain what happened on the night she was last seen in his home.

Ron Reynolds said Thursday his family is being torn apart because the father, Justin DiPietro, and others in the Waterville home won’t explain what happened before Ayla Reynolds was reported missing on Dec. 17.

“That eats me up every day,” an emotional Reynolds said from Portland, where he lives. “Why didn’t they protect her? Why didn’t he protect her? He was responsible for her safety and welfare.”

Ayla’s mother, Trista Reynolds, doesn’t live with DiPietro. Ayla ended up with her father in October after child welfare workers intervened while her mother, who also lives in Portland, 75 miles southwest of Waterville, checked herself into a 10-day rehabilitation program.

DiPietro told police he last saw Ayla on the night of Dec. 16 when he put her to bed. At the time, Ayla, then 20 months old, was wearing green pajamas with polka dots and the words “Daddy’s Princess” on them and had a soft cast on her broken left arm.

Police say DiPietro, his girlfriend and his sister were in the home that night but aren’t telling everything they know. DiPietro’s mother, who owns the house, wasn’t there that night, police said.

DiPietro couldn’t be reached for comment Thursday, and his mother didn’t return a message.

But a few days before Christmas, DiPietro, addressing the public for the first time, said in a statement he had “no idea what happened to Ayla or who is responsible.” He said his family and friends would do “everything we can to assist in this investigation and get Ayla back home.” He declared in another statement days later: “I would never do anything to hurt my child.”

Ayla’s disappearance garnered national attention as scores of law enforcement officers and volunteers searched for her in the week before Christmas. Law enforcement officials went so far as to drain nearby streams, and dive teams have searched the icy Kennebec River, about a mile from DiPietro’s home.

Police eventually declared that Ayla’s disappearance was a crime, and late last month they confirmed that Ayla’s blood was found in the home’s basement, which DiPietro used as his bedroom.

On Thursday, state police spokesman Steve McCausland said investigators continue to work around the clock on the case. He said the number of tips from the public has exceeded 900.

“We continue with as much energy and determination as when we began two months ago,” McCausland said. “At this point we would have liked to have had more answers, but that has not stopped the resolve to get those answers.”

Ron Reynolds, a hospital security officer and former Marine, said he was thankful to police for their efforts. And he said he’s trying hard to keep the faith that his granddaughter will be found alive.

“I just hope she’s OK,” he said.

Attorney Steve Bourget, hired by DiPietro’s family members to speak for them, says there were no drugs or alcohol in the house the night Ayla disappeared. He says the family members continue to cooperate with police.

But McCausland suggested Thursday that the DiPietros could be doing more to help investigators. He said detectives are encouraging the DiPietro family to keep Ayla’s name in the public, something the Reynolds family has been doing through a website, billboards and interviews with the news media.

“We continue to encourage the immediate family to keep Ayla in the headlines and to talk about her,” McCausland said. “One side is doing that, and the other side is not.”

  1. The family and the police are putting the pressure on DiPietro.  I can’t blame the grandfather for doing so.  Knowing that DiPietro took out an insurance policy on that poor baby must make the nightmare he’s going through even more horrific.

    1. I missed hearing about any insurance policy. That always points a suspicious finger at the beneficiary.

    2. How’d he pay the premiums?  Oh yeah, the drug selling sister of girlfriend.  Man, this is messed up.  Not smart but street “smart.”   Hey, when I cash in, I’ll give you a piece of the pie.  This story infuriates me.  Selfish, selfish people.  They might not pay in this life with their buttoned up mouths, but they will in the next one.

      1. That’s exactly what I’m thinking.  They think if they all keep their mouths shut they’ll be rewarded with a big pay-off.

I’m betting that about 10 seconds after Ayla’s found, DiPietro will be on the phone calling the insurance co. trying to cash in. He’s probably got their number on speed dial.

        1. You got it, Dianne. Glad someone agrees with me. Hopefully, one of those idiots will start talking and take a plea deal…doubtful though. Pretty good at hiding evidence, besides blood that is. During their long unemployed work day full of cell phones and lap tops, they must be watching a little bit of Cops and Investigation Discovery. I’m guilty of watching both, but I don’t hurt people.

Subject: [bdn] Re: Grandfather challenges father of missing toddler Ayla Reynolds

          1. I wonder if he watches shows about child killers that eventually get nailed and spend the rest of their lives in prison.  Bet he hates those shows.

  2. I suspect both parents of knowing something. The mom has been way too unmoved by all this. She seems to have no sadness what so ever.

    1. I don’t think she is directly or indirectly involved, but I think she has an idea of the crowd this ex hangs out with and which one of them would take a child or assist in a crime

      1.  Like I was sayin if they are drug dealers and they owed the wrong person a LOT of money this wouldn’t be too hard to imagine…..Whatever happened in that house the 3 are all involved or someone would’ve turned state’s evidence to save their own neck. None of them seem to me to be the type that would do life for a friend…

      2. I think your reading too much into this, the Mom is just plain angry that something has happened to her daughter.

      1.  “famous”? So she was in the news before? What case? I’ve never heard of her before. Is this like when local reporters think they are real celebrities? ha ha I think that is funny because they are not. Not unless they do the National news. I met some woman once that used to do the local news and she got mad when I didn’t recognize her. I had to laugh that local TV reporters think they are actually popular. Sure they may be well known but they are hardly “famous” people. Not unless they were someone like Barbara Walters or Brian Williams.

    2. I suspect that she’s on methadone or another med after coming out of rehab. Those meds don’t just mask your desire to get high, they mask all your emotions.

  3. You go grandfather.  From what I’ve seen, you’re the one who’s grieving the most or at least one who shows it.  Still think it was the girlfriend, her sister (the drug dealer) and DP’s sister.  Justin’s in bed with his girlfriend, the sister is upstairs with her child, poor Ayla wakes up, probably woke up the baby she was sleeping with, they all want to go to bed and “sleep it off.” Who knows what happened next. Baby missing.  Grandfather, keep pushing.  No baby deserves this.   Bunch of freakin losers and cowards.  The state should take all of their offspring away from them.

    1. i agree . the state should actually do their job and remove the other children who were there and see how those parents like it to feel their child missing.  oh,  sorry, i forgot, they don’t care about their kids either considering they were all partying and THAT apparently was more important than the children. Shame on them all. GOD KNOWS WHAT HAPPENED !!!! And soon the truth will come out. You poor poor fools,  you not only destroyed an innocent baby’s life and her familiy’s lives,  but you will figure out soon enough from God above that you have destroyed your own lives. For the ones responsible,  you will be punished by God above.
God forbid anything happens to my grandchildren, I am one who will fight to the end for them and WILL come out on top…So , for that, you go grampa, and keep up your faith. God Bless you and your family.

    2.  Drug dealer ? Is that a fact ? That opens a whole new can of worms….Isn’t it possible that maybe they owed the wrong guy some money ? It certainly would explain why nobody in that house will turn…..they’re too scared…..

      1.  Seriously…too scared to talk and tell what happened when it comes to your own freakin daughter missing???  Are you serious right now!!!!  I don’t care who freakin would threaten me…g*d d**n it I would be squealing like a little pig, especially if it had anything to do with finding my child!!!  WOW “DUDE” you are a true winner!!

        1. if that is true, about dealing in drugs, and money is owed  by her or what not, if they spoke up and did say their names or anything, it’s like playing with the mob, then you might as well consider the whole family dead, just saying.

          1. ya’ll watch too many movies… it’s not like the mexican drug cartel lives in maine, EVERY dealer in maine is a little punk who’s too weak or stupid to get a real honest job

    3.  I know this sounds awful but I wish that there were laws and requirements to pass before people would be allowed to have children. Financially, Emotionally, Psychologically, etc etc etc. Sounds cruel? Well look at where most these kids end up when they grow up. On the street, dead, in and out of jail, poor, on drugs, abusive to their own kids. So on and so on.  I think “not being born” is a lot more humane than what happens to children that live to adulthood. If they live past their terrible childhoods they end up emotionally crippled. I’m not saying I’m pro-abortion just against letting just anybody have children without passing requirements.

  4. The police are trying to pressure the 3 adults who won’t talk. It’s like a Chinese water torture. A drip here and another drip there. A constant steady cascading of drips until the damn cracks, or one of the 3 breaks down.

    1.  I agree. It appears that they are letting out rope and hoping that someone somehow wraps it around thier neck.

    2. I also agree.  I think the police know a lot more than they’re letting on and they’re using it, along with family pressure to see who starts to unravels first.

  5. Tell you what if i was the grandfather of Ayla  the father would of talked the day it happened or shortly thereafter GUARANTEED!!!!!

        1. Excuse Me?  I was STRONGLY supporting Brian’s theory on how he would have handled things if it was his granddaughter that was missing.  And let me tell you, if I was his wife, and it was my granddaughter that was missing I’d be right there beside him cheering him on while he did it.

Maybe you think they should all sit around in a circle holding hands and singing Kumbaya?

You got a problem with what I write?  Then please by all means feel free to pass right on by when you see one of my posts.  I won’t miss you.

And oh, by the way:  HAMMMER DOWN BRIAN!

          1. Mr. Reynolds:  If you get that dirtbag DiPietro in a room for a discussion…Punch him in the face for me.

Ron Reynolds has shown great restraint…more than most people who might be in a similar situation.  He also has been the ONE consistent advocate for poor little Ayla.

    1.  I have to wonder what kind of dad was he to Trista. She is a young woman with 2 children born out of wedlock and a substance abuse problem. Where was he when she was growing up?

      1. Ya we do not know that My guess is he is far from perfect. That being said as you get older you tend to be more mature . Grandparents sometimes do much better with grand kids than they did with thier own.

  6. Add this to the “No Comment” stack.  After all this time I doubt he is not going to comment, more time to put pressure is needed before he falls asleep and dreams up another story.

  7. Someone please bring this little girl back so that this woman has no reason to be on camera anymore.  Thank you.

    1. I’m sure she’d like nothing more than to have her child back.  If she isn’t on camera she’s wrong and if she is she’s wrong — people are just so judgemental!

    2. I get sick of saying it–and I’m sure people get sick of seeing me write it–but: Steve McCausland and the other police officials involved have specifically ASKED Trista and other family members to PLEASE keep talking to the media. It’s the sole reason the news keeps reporting on this case. If the mom and grandfather and all the others suddenly stopped returning the media’s calls, the vast majority of people would simply move on to whichever celebrity scandal is on the cover in the check-out aisles.

Don’t fault Trista for talking to the media just because you don’t especially like her. THANK her for keeping attention focused on her little girl’s disappearance.

      1. Well said Detective Dwyer. Your brilliance in the case is quite informative. I was kind of hoping you might have this one solved by now.

  8. No drugs or alcohol???!!!!!!  Are you freakin kidding me?   Yup, it was a rousing game of Monopoly with Diet Coke, followed by duck, duck, goose with the little ones. The sister of the girlfriend who got busted for selling decided to leave the stash at home?  Right………….wonder who’s paying this lawyer.  Welfare won’t.  He’s trying to pull a Jose Biaz……get involved in a mess and hopefully make a name for himself.  Well, some lawyers are liars….go for it, dude.

  9. We do not hear anything about the fathers family keeping this child in the eye of the public?  Where is this DiPietro family?  Justin’s mother we have not heard anything from her is sometime?  It’s the mother family you hear about keep the little girl in the public eye.   if the father doesn’t know how blood of his daughter got in the basement…..what kind of father is he?  Come on that guy has to speak…someone will spill the beans……

    1. I’m really hoping that this little girl didn’t fall down the basement stairs to and untimely end…..8( Wasn’t the basement where her father was the night she disappeared?

        1. Just speculating here — if all the adults were “sleeping it off” (whatever it is – drugs, alcohol, a combination), would it be feasible that Ayla tried to get to her father and fell down the stairs, but none of the adults heard it because they were passed out?  They then woke up the next morning and found her at the bottom of the stairs already dead…. Panic sets in and rather than cop to the accident they decided to try to cover it up?  Now they are in so deep, no one wants to be the first one to fill the beans…

          1. OK, I can see that… or she fell down the stairs and the house was full of drugs… so they take the time to clean out the house, then too much time has gone by.. the poor baby is long gone, and instead of trying to explain why they waited they covered it up…
I hate thinking this way!! I pray that they find this baby girl alive.

          2. I hate thinking this way too… but at this point, and with the evidence of blood in the basement, it is hard not to.  I just wish it would all come to an end and justice would be served.  That is the only way this little girls’ memory will be honored (if indeed she is dead…).

    2. He knows where the blood came from I am sure of that. There was more blood there then just a small scratch that is where he made her lay after he did something to her or the gf. I like how the mother has changed her story to she was there an now she wasn’t that is a bit interesting.
DiPietro is a low life drug peddler who I hope rots in hell for what he did to little Ayla an I hope he breaks or someone rats his out.

  10. “Attorney Steve Bourget, hired by DiPietro’s family members to speak for
them, says there were no drugs or alcohol in the house the night Ayla
disappeared. He says the family members continue to cooperate with
    police.”

Wow – Somebody must be selling a lot of drugs to be able to pay for this lawyer and his drivel.

    1. You would think so, he is not a cheap lawyer.  He has retained this lawyer the day she disappeared. Weird on my part, but something fishy is still wrong with the dad

      1. By all reports, Attorney Bourget represents DiPietro’s mother and sister; there have been no reports that he represents DiPietro.  You have claimed many, many times that DiPietro is represented by an attorney but you have NEVER given any verifiable information to support that statement.  How do you know that DiPietro “retained this lawyer the day she disappeared?”

I want to be sure I’ve read and viewed every bit of information available on this case. Thanks for your help on that!

        1. He has retained the same lawyer, he was shown on tv with him.  I know Justin Personally, will not say from where, but i know who he is, he is a terrible person to deal with.  Have a great night. You will see soon who is lying about Ayla.  Enjoy defending Justin

          1. I’m not defending anyone; I’m just looking for facts.  He may or may not be lying.  Only time will tell.  But, if you could tell me what tv station aired a news clip with DiPietro and his attorney, I would greatly appreciate it.  You’ve made that statement numerous times but have never provided any real proof to back it up.  Not saying you are lying, just asking for verifiable evidence which you seem to be either unwilling or unable to provide.

  11. All the adults in this case seem to be making this case less about finding out if the little girl is indeed still alive and more about them. I think the State Police are letting these people fight amongst themselves with the idea that sooner or later someone will implicate someone or crack up themselves.

  12.  I wonder why DHS hasn’t  stepped  in, again,  and taken  the other children that were present  at the time. Put them in a safe place, just until Alya is found and everything has been solved.
Maybe this family is being targeted for some reason? I’m thinking more and more about the safety of the other children.

    1. DHHS only steps in when they shouldn’t and never does when they should… they are axx backwards.  They should step in and take Gabby out of the DIPS household.  One thing that I know for sure, if they did something to prevent Justin from taken Ayla, Most likely she would be home playing with her little brother and Trista would not have to be on every tv and newspaper doing what Justin should be helping her do!  I’m not saying that Trista is the best Mom, but Ayla did not come up missing when she lived with her.  We need to incouage her to put the pressure on the DIPS.  There will be plenty of time to call out her wrongs once poor Ayla is found!

      1. Trista may not be perfect, but what I’m hearing is she did see she had a problem and got help, she’s doing the right things. This shouldn’t be about Trista “the less than perfect, regular, normal  human being”. She’s been pretty much cleared of wrong doing, so I don’t get the point of bashing her past at all.
I think you might be  right in defining the meaing of DHHS.

        1. I personally agree with you about her past…  I’m just saying that not everyone does.. but they can wait until Ayla is found and stop discouraging a Mom from doing everything that she can to find her little girl.

    2. This is what happened from what I have pieced together from all the reports on here. They had a party with adults an no Drugs or Booze was involved….Red Flag. Like one other person said what did they play games? Another fact
DiPietro has no idea where the blood came from that was Ayla’s found in the basement. Red Flag. Of course he knows where the blood came from if he didn’t then he was a poor father. His mother was in the home now she isn’t ? Red Flag. Either your there or your not there. If
DiPietro his gf an his sister were the only two in his house that night an they all sleep in the basement in
DiPietro’s room the only way Ayla is going to end up missing if for one of them to put her somewhere. I am not an investigator but I will tell you this there is a puzzle an I am putting the pieces together. Life insurance taken out on toddler…Red Flag. He only had her since October of 2011. Two months before she ends up missing he takes out policy on her?  Cast already on Ayal’s arm only in fathers home two months. Red Flag. There were other children there maybe one of the other children pushed her down the stairs an they worried that the police wouldn’t believe them so they covered it up. I had a friend who had a young child and they had a party an they forgot the baby was on the bed and they piled all the coats from everyone on top of the baby an she suficated to death but no charges were ever filed as it was an accident and drugs an booze were involved but that was 20 years ago.

      1. I didn’t catch the insurance in earlier articles. thanks for the re-cap, lot of red flags.
Good job on the P.I. work.
Everyone slept in the same room?….ok, h-m-m gives me some concern over the girlfriends and the sisters children.Kind of makes all adulys suspect.
Sorry to hear what happened to your friend and altho I have heard of other sad stories, DiPietro has ruined any chance of that being an excuse.

  13. There will be plenty of time to call out her wrongs once poor Ayla is found! oops… I just realized that this comment posted twice.. I did not think the first one went through.

    1. Hindsight always puts a different perspective on a situation.  DHHS had no reason at the time to stop the father from moving the child in with him and his mother, he had every legal right to her.  There’s a lot of speculation about his lifestyle but DHHS doesn’t work on speculations in a situation so legally they couldn’t stop him.

    2. I agree with you about DHHS they give the parents the kids that they know will abuse them an when they end up missing or in a river they say well we really didn’t know what was going to happen. People like myself who can’t have kids cringe an the idea of them putting kids in an unsafe home. Ayla already had a broken arm from her father her mother even said that
DiPietro was aggressive. I bet his gf threw her down the stairs.

  14. ohh yeah smart. Both mother and grandfather step it up at the same time. Come on, let the professionals do the investigating. You both are doing nothing but interfering and if anything making things harder. FACT: if foul play is involved then the horrible has already happened. If she is being hidden away somewhere then I would look at the ones squawking the most since they are trying to deflect blame….

    1. Many time’s I’d agree with you on this but I just have this feeling that someone in in Law Enforcement is really pulling the strings in this.  It seems like info in being given to the mother and her family and they’re in turn giving it out to the public.  The LEO’s maintain a certain degree of separation from the info releases while at the same time letting the suspects know they’re on to them.  I could of course be very wrong on this though.  The psychology of this whole thing I’m sure will come out someday and we may never know until then.

  15. And I would like to add… you go Grampy!!  Put the pressure right on Justin!!  I’m assuming that Justin is not out looking for Ayla, because he knows where she is!!

    1.  the police should put all adults in cells and lock them up with no food, water, phones, clothes, blankets, nothing at all  until someone speaks up.   what the child has gone through or is going through ,  these partyers, cowards, and low lives should go through ten times more. And then when the truth comes out, which it will,  then they should ALL be punished for it for not saying anything or doing anything to prevent it.
      God, I hate ignorant people.

  16. If no Alcohol  was in the house or drugs then how did she end up missing? I think the father has more to do with this then he is telling. An I heard that the His mother was there the night she went missing. I would still arrest DiPietro an charge him with Murder. I think he did it an him an his gf are covering it up. If you don’t know who is coming in an out of your home then drugs or alcohol has to be involved. He was there to take care of her an no one in Maine gets taken from a home this is Maine not California.

  17. This whole sad situation might never have happened if  Maine’s DHHS  had not intervened in this family’s life.  The average citizen is held hostage to a veritable alphabet soup of regulatory agencies, most of which do more harm than good.  If Gov. LePage is looking for ways to simplify and downsize state government, he could start by clipping the wings of the DHHS. Giving police powers to a cadre of bureaucrats and social workers is like pouring gasoline on a fire.

  18. Looking at the house design I find it highly unlikely that anyone could enter the house without being heard!    One question on my mind is when was the last time someone other than those in the house saw Ayla?  I have very bad feelings about the DiPietro family and believe that Justin DiPietro, his sister and girlfriend all know what happened to Ayla!

  19. So many questions very few answers.  I wonder if the physian in the past noticed any signs of child abuse on Ayla? And   we need a new law,  when doc appointments are missed, DHHS   should of been called ASAP.  Checked up on Ayla.  This way we would know the actual date she was missing.
No drugs and alcohol  in the house?  Oh please give me a break.  No one in this house worked.  And  no one in the house is talking couldn’t be an accident, 911 was never called ,  Logically  this is a drug story that went bad.

  20. I keep reading in the below posts about the Insurance Policy.  Keep in mind that Ayla’s mother reported that information.  The police have not confirmed that. I wouldn’t believe anything until the police report it.

    1. Under a different article a family member of the insurance agent confirmed that Justin bought a 25,000 insurance policy the week after Ayla was placed with him.

      1. Hmmm…Justin being unemployed…wonder who’s paying the premiums on a $25, 000 insurance policy???  (Probably we, the taxpayers who pay his welfare!!)

  21. Okay, Pop.  Time’s a wasting. How about a little man to man talk with Justin?

All those connected seem to think if they keep quiet, everything will just go away.

The son-in-law, his girlfriend, her sister, and Mom, who says she wasn’t even there, don’t appear to be distraught about the loss of that little girl.

Time to go calling – knocking on doors, asking questions.  How can these people be allowed to just shrug this whole episode off, as if it were a rumor?

They were there the morning that Ayla was discovered missing.  No one broke in.  Obviously someone was either admitted, or, someone went out carrying that baby girl.

We can only guess. Posing some grueling questions to all who shared that house that night, might put the lid on the issue.

What else can we expect from Ayla’s granddad – especially a former Marine?

    Semper Fi

  22. A child doesn’t just  disappear without a trace from a home. Nothing to suspect a break-in? Things just don’t add up here.  The father and his mother don’t seem overly concerned, just the child’s mother and grandfather seem to be the concerned ones.

  23. Two days in a row with this, BDN? The Maine soap opera continues…I’m just surprised Nancy Grace hasn’t joined in. Nobody exploits the tragedy of a  missing child like she does, although this family, as aided by the BDN, is catching up fast.

    1. Should they walk away from their daughter/grand-daughter out of fear that ignorant people like yourself are tired of hearing them keep her name out there.  In case you haven’t followed the reports — McCausland from the State Police has asked that the family keep talking and keep Alya’s name in the press.

May I suggest you buy a different paper — if seeing about a child missing and her mother and grand-father doing the only thing they can do short of stringing that father up upsets you DON’T READ ABOUT IT!
