EDDINGTON, Maine — A Brewer woman called 911 last week saying she was chained to a chimney in a basement and then hung up her cellphone, Maine State Police Trooper Tucker Bonnevie said Friday.

Police say they later found her drunk in a tanning bed.

“A female caller stated she had been chained in the basement and she said she didn’t know who” had put her there, the trooper said. “She sounded very intoxicated. She also said whoever had chained her up was giving her alcohol and then they hung up.”

Police got the emergency call at around 9:40 p.m. Feb. 6 and traced the cellphone’s signal to a cellphone tower on Riverside Drive in Eddington.

Bonnevie began walking the roadway and eventually found a Land Rover registered to the 40-year-old caller parked in a driveway of a 51-year-old man who has a long history of police involvement, the trooper said.

By this time Troopers Jonah O’Roak and Forrest Simpson, as well as state police Sgt. Scott Hamilton, had arrived to assist. Repeated attempts to contact those inside the building went ignored.

“Eventually, a light came on,” Bonnevie said. “A couple minutes after the light came on a gentleman did come out. He appeared to be intoxicated.”

He was placed in handcuffs and a search of the house was conducted.

“We found the female face down in a tanning bed,” Bonnevie said. “She was not chained. She was not locked like what was reported. She was, in fact, intoxicated.”

Troopers were “expecting the worst” and found two heavily intoxicated people.

No arrests were made.

The tanning bed was not turned on, but the woman did go to an area hospital later in the day to be treated for a burn.

“I’m assuming it was from the tanning bed,” Bonnevie said.

The trooper described the call as very unique.

“It was definitely one of the weirdest calls that I have been to,” the trooper said.

    1. Apparently, it’s only against the law if you aren’t drunk. If you are drunk and acting like a fool you are let go. Go figure.

    1. I wouldn’t tan but maybe it will improve my social life if I buy a tanning bed. The surfboard by the front door didn’t seem to attract too many women. I tried putting a ski rack on my car and that didn’t get me some, either. Maybe a flashing neon sign that says “Allen’s” will do the trick?

  1. Looks to me like the state police have essentially advertised in the newspaper that it’s o.k. to waste their time and resources so long as you’re drunk when you do it.  “But officer, it’s not my fault.  I was drunk.”

  2. Good thing they upped the cost of cigarettes rather than alcohol, I can just imagine the calls they use to get from so many people on smokes.

  3. Why did they place the man in handcuffs?  Is it a crime to be heavily intoxicated in your own home?  Maybe he violated his probation?

  4. While everyone is complaining about there being no arrests they are overlooking something  very important.  The call came in with no address, and “cut short” by the hang up.  It was a cell phone so there was no address attached to it.  YET the troopers still managed to zero in AND find the person who made the call.  This is important because if it HAD been a real situation, they could have rescued the victim.  Kudo’s to the Troopers for a great job in locating the person, and handcuffing a possible suspect before searching the premises.

  5. Neither the State Police or any other law enforcement agency has the resources to deal with all the idiots out there. The public doesn’t hear about most of the crazy things going on-and that’s probably best if you want to sleep at night . Before cell phones anyone with a cheap Radio Shack Scanner knew a good deal of what law enforcement was up to. If  they arrest someone they may have to show up in court on more than one occasion. If you see 6 cruisers parked in front of a courthouse who’s minding the store? They simply pick their battles-just like the rest of us.

  6. They make a point to say the man has a long legal history, but say nothing about the woman….Why would this be a news story at all if there was not the  possibility that maybe down the line, we might here of an arrest for a more serious crime?
