BURLINGTON, Vt. — The Vermont Catamounts outscored the Maine Black Bears 41-21 in the second half en route to a 71-54 America East women’s basketball victory Sunday.
Corinne Wellington scored nine first-half points and Samantha Baranowski added six points and six rebounds to help Maine battle to a 33-30 lead at the end of the first half, but Vermont used scoring surges of 8-0 and 12-2 in the second half to beat the Bears.
Maine slipped to 6-21 overall and 3-11 in America East while Vermont is now 10-18 and 4-11, respectively.
Wellington finished with 14 points to lead Maine while Ashleigh Roberts chipped in with nine points and nine rebounds.
Niki Taylor paced Vermont with 16 points while Ashley Hoyt and Tierra Shumpert each added 13. Shanai Heber added nine and Kayla Burchill had eight.
Vermont shot 40 percent from the floor (25 of 62) while holding Maine to a 36 percent effort (19-53), but Maine hit 87 percent of its free throws (14-16), compared to Vermont’s 71 percent (17-24).
At the start of the second half, Maine upped its lead to 35-30 when Rebecca Knight scored on a nice back door cut and pass from Baranowski. However, Vermont responded with five unanswered points, capped by a Burchill 3-pointer to tie it at 35.
The Bears surged back to a three-point lead before Vermont made six straight free and a layup to go up 43-38 five minutes into the half. Courtney Anderson responded with a 3-pointer for Maine, but Vermont then went on an 8-0 run and went up 59-48 to pull away from the Bears.
Back to the PIG for a 5th consecutive season. At least this team is not 1-26 like Blodgett’s URI squad ;)
