BANGOR, Maine — A Canadian man was arrested Friday at the Fort Fairfield Port of Entry after oxycodone pills were found sewn into the waistband of his pants, according to court documents.
Troy Spittle, 38, of Perth, New Brunswick, was charged with importation of oxycodone, a highly addictive painkiller.
He made his first appearance Monday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Margaret Kravchuk in federal court in Bangor. She ordered that he be detained temporarily.
The judge scheduled a bail hearing for Friday. Because Spittle is a foreigner, it would be unusual for Kravchuk to grant bail.
Spittle drove his 1997 Dodge Dakota pickup into the Fort Fairfield border crossing station about 2:30 p.m. Friday, according to court documents. He told a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer that he was headed to an auto parts store.
Spittle was referred for a secondary inspection after his breathing became shallow and rapid as a narcotics detection dog was making its way around the vehicle, according to court documents.
As part of the secondary inspection, an officer did a pat-down of Spittle and he felt “many small objects inside the waist line seam of [his] pants,” an affidavit stated. When asked what they were, Spittle at first said he did not know, then admitted they were oxycodone pills.
Investigators found 23 80-milligram oxycodone tablets hidden in Spittle’s clothing, according to court documents.
Spittle told investigators that he had been smuggling pills into Maine once a month for the past 1½-2 years. He said he sold the pills to support his own addiction. If convicted, Spittle faces up to 20 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

They should have sent him on his way… And followed him to the “SCUMBAGS” buying the crap!
You would think so, but some of these agencies want the headlines.
I’m sure Lepage will tell Schneider to give him a slap on the wrist and send him back home to Canada.
He can tell her that but if you read it again you’ll see it’s a federal case. But maybe Obama will come to his rescue.
You’re suffering from LePage Derangement Syndrome. Get help immediately; there IS hope for you.
For a guy who hates illegals you sure love Lepage allot.
Are you suggesting that he was not born in the US? If so are you suggesting that he did not enter this country legally? Are suggesting he is an illegal alien?
Is there a birther organization regarding the governor much like the one that exists for Obama?
As soon as Lepage lost his military draft deferment he moved to Canada got married and had two children. Once the draft was over Lepage left his wife and two little girls moved back to the USA when to UMO as a Maine resident and then divorced his wife.
So yes I’m suggesting Lepage may not be a US citizen or only became one recently.
He never had a deferment and there is plent of evidence to support that he never had one. In fact he recieved a draft number. That is documented. Living out of the country during war time while having a draft number was not illegal. My uncle lived in Germany during the late 1960s and he had a draft number too. LePage was born in Lewiston, which is in Maine, which is a state in the United States so that makes him a United States Citizen.
How did he manage to get a job in New Brunswick Canada if he was a US citizen? He must have been a duel citizen or he gave up his US citizenship. He had a wife and two kids in Canada at the time he went to UMO. Did he claim he was a citizen then even though he was the head of the Lumber union in New Brunswick at the same time.
Most likely the same way I got a job working in a foreign country as an American. You apply for a visa or the company you work for secures a visa for you. You dont have to become a daul citizen or renounce your citizenship. America itself has tons of legal, foreign workers here on thing slike H2B or J1 visas. This is not uncommon. I am married to a citizen of the country I am currently in. If I decide to seperate from her would it be that odd for me to come back to the USA? Im not sure you have to be a citizen to be the head of any union. Is there any documentation that he was the head of any union?
Canada has a very strict immigration policy especially in the poor provinces like New Brunswick where Lepage lived . The big exception during Lepage’s years, was for draft dodgers from America who got temporary work Visa’s with help from the Catholic church..
we all are suffering from his lepage derangement syndrome.
You mean
lepage’s derangement syndrome
Im assuming Lord Whiteman is at least a hgh school graduate who recieved lessons on how state and federal governments work. I find it hard to believe that he or she would not know that this would be a Federal case, especially after reading the article. Therefore I agree, with your post.
Canadian tree rustles, Canadian drug smugglers. What the difference?
I don’t think that LePage would have any say over what is obviously a federal case. As the article clearly stated, he was arrested at the border.
Well just for the record the Bangor Daily as a reputable paper needs to check its information as this man is NOT Canadian he was born and raised in the U.S. I feel for his wife and his children
Spittle? Not in federal prison.
Why 20 years, when the last two times we only fined them(very little) and took the car? What’s up with that..
Federal Sentencing Guidelines. These articles always state what the maximum sentence is but never mention that in the federal system a complex formula to sentence people is used.
It also depends on how good of an canary singer they are.. I know someone who sold 2 yes 2 pills and was sentenced to 20 years reduced down to 7 years. Why cuz he wouldnt sing, and then proceeded to tell him in court that they were making an example out of him. So to me basically this is saying to all who get caught up that if you tell me what I want to know then you will get barely anything, refuse and you will get shafted!
They sang like good little canaries. : ) Dont sing and see what happens!
If he had been smuggling for about 2 years why did it take so long to catch him?
have you ever seen the border up here. its a tiny rinky dinky place. But since they put in the new BP building.. we are swarmed with them. can’t spit no where with out hitting one! So it makes me wonder as well. My best guess would be someone over here got in trouble.. (read the news.. lots of busts going on right now in this small area) and in order to get off easy people are running their mouths about everything and everyone they know. You can only play with fire for so long until you are burnt. Every dog has his day, and his was Friday. Maine has enough of their own issues with drugs, we don’t need more coming across the border. For that matter the whole US has enough problems with out the border lying countries adding to it.
Good job by the Officers at the Port of Entry in Fort Fairfield…
Do the customs use water-boarding as a means of gathering info? It seems the dude gave up a bit more info than he should of.
Looking at this amount of money and jail.. People squeal like little piggies and tell all they know about everything and everyone.
I just feel bad that he is so addicted that an 80 mg pill is not strong enough for him that he needs to seek others.. This guy needs rehab and help in a bad way.. Maybe will sitting in one of our cells over here he can get the treatment he needs to live a productive life. Well as productive as it can be considering the amount of trouble he is and and the record that will carry with him through life.
I still fail to see what people find is so great about using and dealing drugs. it really is Sad, many lives are ruined every day… :-(
… i blame it on the lack of jobs………… and just because he did this doesnt necessarily make him a scumbag ppl how about you ppl for judging a person you do not know. pretty sure that makes u scumbags too. im from perth i know how much it sucks to try and make a living there but not everyone gets the chance to get out of there. so they have to make due with what they can.
I agree.. Do what you have to do to survive. However there are many addicts over there and down through Woodstock and further that you all can transport what ever to who ever you want. We have enough issues in Maine from drugs that we don’t need or want Canada’s problem over here added to ours. If I had my way about it all people and vehicles coming across into the states would have a dog circle them. Call it what you want.. but our border lying towns are going to hell fast due to the ease of getting these life changing drugs. If Canada was smart they would do the same as well, and protect themselves. It is hard to crack down on problems when you have fuel being added to it. Yes I am not dumb and know that this is a problem that will never be gone, its called supply and demand. If someone wants something bad enough they will do what ever, pay what ever to get it, and there will always be some0ne who “” is doing what they have to survive or as this guys says to support his habit or other addictions, cuz obviously an 80 mg pill is not enough.. Can you say this guy needs REHAB before he is dead!!!!!””
I agree dogs should circle all vehicles. Drugs are a problem every where. it’s the way life is. And yeah rehab would be good for those who need it but I’m not sure there’s even a rehab program in Perth. It’s a pretty dead beat town it’s gone to heck and I only go back to visit my family. If there was more resources for the people there this could be avoided. However alot of ppl from Perth and area enter there on a regular basis because of the good resources it’s the closest place to get for shopping Walmart etc. I agree with ur reply entirely tho USA doesn’t need Canadians bringing drugs in nor does Canada need it . It’s sad honestly but it will most probably continue to happen I pray for those who need help that they get it no matter where in the world they are. Drugs are hard to overcome. But once you do it’s a wonderful accomplishment
I hope he gets the maximum sentence. Since it will be a federal case, I know he will get more than the kind of “slap on the wrist” sentence Maine hands out. How many people has this guy hurt by supplying them with drugs? How many families has he damaged. He is a dealer, he needs to be punished.
