PORTLAND, Maine — Independent Senate candidate Angus King completed the transfer of his stake in a wind energy company he co-founded to his business partner and said Monday he would go one step further to avoid any appearance of a conflict of interest by placing his investments in a blind trust.
King declined Monday to put a value on his stake in Independence Wind, which was formally transferred Sunday night to his business partner, Rob Gardiner, former president of Maine Public Broadcasting Network.
Founded in 2007, Independence Wind partnered on a 22-turbine, 50-megawatt wind power project in Roxbury, which received a federal loan guarantee. King said it’s important to avoid any potential appearance of impropriety.
King, a self-made millionaire, also told The Associated Press that he would put his investments in a blind trust if he’s elected to the Senate, just like he did after he was elected governor in 1994. The trust would shield King from information about the identity of investments, which would be managed by trustees.
Chris O’Neil of Friends of Maine’s Mountains, which contends wind turbines are ruining the state’s scenery while failing to deliver on promises of affordable green energy, says King was a convincing pitchman for wind power.
“Given the likelihood that a Senator Angus King will be asked to vote on huge appropriations measures that would give cash grants to wind developers, he avoids a level of firsthand conflict by getting out now,” O’Neil said, noting that another Independence Wind project is pending in western Maine.
King, who served for two terms as governor, is one of at least 12 candidates vying for the U.S. Senate seat that’s being vacated by Republican Olympia Snowe, who opted against seeking a fourth term.
Six Republicans and four Democrats have filed petitions to face off in Maine’s June primaries. At least one other independent, tea party candidate Andrew Ian Dodge, intends to run.
King, a former Democrat, reiterated Monday that contrary to claims by Republicans in Washington, there have been no backroom deals for him to caucus with one party or the other if elected. He has said he could caucus with one party or the other, depending on the issue, or none at all.
He said he wants to work in the middle to bridge the division between Republicans and Democrats to get things done.
“My whole point is to come in from the outside and shake things up. If I say I’m going to shake things up but if that doesn’t work then I’ll join the Red Sox or the Yankees, then it defeats the whole point of what I’m trying to do,” he said.
Widely considered to be the front-runner, King said he has been busy setting up a fundraising committee, organizing petition gatherers, raising money, creating a website and finding office space in Brunswick. Independents must submit 4,000 signatures by June 1 to appear on the November ballot.
King spent about $1 million of his money on a campaign that he narrowly won when he first ran for governor as an independent. He said he hopes to avoid having to spend his own money this time because he’s now widely known and should be able to tap into a larger base of political donors.
King became a millionaire in 1994 when he sold his energy consulting business, Northeastern Energy Management Inc. King made $8 million after paying back bank loans, capital gains taxes and other costs.
He declined to discuss on Monday how much of that money he still has, but he joked that he hadn’t yet managed to spend all of the proceeds.
Sandy Maisel, director of the Goldfarb Center for Public Affairs at Colby College, said it’s difficult for wealthy individuals to avoid conflicts of interest because their investment portfolios often include large companies that benefit from government contracts, grants or other subsidies.
By taking early steps to avoid potential conflicts of interest, King is showing he’s serious about his Senate candidacy, Maisel said.

You can sell Angus, but we will not forget. Your sale is a political stunt. We all know where you stand on protecting the tax/rate payers and Maine’s enviorment; sitting, perched atop an industrial wind turbine. Your Achilles’ heel!
Wonder who he sold out to.
Anybody and everybody.
Thats who.
If Bangor Casino has taught me anything is you have to know when to CASH OUT !
Mr. King don’t forget to tip the dealer.
BTW The “Green Movement” is a bubble. B . U . B . B. L . E
Like :
Junk Bonds,
Tech Stocks,
Mortgage Backed Securities,
Municipal Bonds,
and sadly Higher Education.
Beautiful in Theory, absolutely destructive in practice.
This does not make a lot of sense if you think about it for two seconds.
Higher Education has existed in this country since 1634. That’s one hell of a bubble. Maybe you mean privitized higher education? The privitization of student loans?
Higher Education itself is not a bubble and is not destructive.
Also, while there was a tech stock bubble in the 90’s, it did leave a lot of good things behind that still make people money and improve quality of life today. The Green Movement holds the same potential.
There is such thing as an Education Bubble, let me clarify, when we enter higher education institution whether its a Local Community College or an Ivy League School we treat that time and money as an ‘investment’.
We expect to receive returns when we are handed that piece of paper after our hard work. Those returns will not only cover the initial costs but also hopefully provide us a future return.
The price of attending college is only increasing while the return on the investment is decreasing. People believing a college education is the answer by private and public forces create high volumes. High “Volumes” of students attending at high “Prices” that are significantly higher than the value of the degree or time, create bubbles.
Think about the influence of colleges lowering standards, increasing tutition knowing fully that many of the students will default on their loans. Churning out worthless diplomas like a widget factory produces widgets. Its scary I know first hand, and i’m sure you know someone that has experienced this.
http://theweek.com/article/index/96989/Bursting_the_Higher_Ed_Bubble
Fair enough, I think that there is a lot of truth to that. I think that in particular, for-profit schools such as ITT Tech or Kaplan are much more to blame then your average state university system. If a college accepts anyone who applies, that should set off alarms. I personally do know people who have experienced what you described, but I also have a college degree that I treasure deeply and that will pay for itself many times over. I guess I would say that there are bubbles inside the larger higher education system, rather than the entire system is a bubble.
Thats true I should have said that the bubble is not exclusive to State Universities. I too value my degree but you and I are in the minority not the majority. And I felt the damaging effects of being burdened by loans and a job market that not only didnt want me but didnt want anyone with better credentials then me, and I look at these young kids that are pressured by easy public and private money that still think the rat race is over once you graduate scary times for the young ones and i’m saying this at 27 lol.
I’m not against Green Alternative Energy which is spearheading the green movement. I’m just saying that the volume and prices may not match the benefits. I’m open to listen to anyone that can disprove this.
Just a shuffling of paper…………..
What are the specifics of the deal?
What does this say about the way the government giveaways are frontloaded?
Does one need to produce electricity to make money with wind turbines or does one simply need to hire slick law firms that can overpower a local citizenry up until the point the massive frontloaded government welfare check arrives?
Let’s face it – King barely got the Roxbury Pond (Record Hill) turbines in the ground and they produced almost no electricity. But because of Obama’s stimulus program, he likely got MILLION$ frontloaded for not having done a thing. So he exits and makes more money for doing nothing than ten men make in their entire lifetimes.
The ultimate insider.
And when one day the turbines fail, they all walk away because of the $102 million loan guarantee from Obama given to King and his partner in the deal, the Yale Endowment. Up until that GIFT from the U.S. taxpayer, Yale hid behind the shell company name “BAYROOT”, perhaps the most destructive clear cutter in Maine. And these elitists at Yale profess to be world class global stewards of the planet. All money conniving hypocrites playing the people for idiots.
King is off to his next fancy, he has almost assuredly put MASSIVE taxpayer money in his pocket and the poor residents of Roxbury Pond now suffer in their disfigured paradise.
Patten_Pete – hope you have a bunker because in your mind the world is coming to an end.
Laptops, turbines and Senate – oh my!
Laptops, turbines and Senate – oh my!
Laptops, turbines and Senate – oh my!
Better pull your blinds- they are watching you.
Because you can’t refute a single one of the truths I wrote, you resort to silliness.
It looks to me to be a standard tactic of the mindless, unthinking drones of the Left.
hey1, you seem to have taken an annoying approach to replying to Pete. He made some legitimate observations and you seem to want to mock him for doing so. What do you think about the points he made regarding King’s being on the take regarding wind turbines?
I drive by the Roxbury turbines 2-3 times per week and rarely do I see them not turning. If they are turning they are producing electricity and making money, no?
Clearcuts are simply a method of performing a final removal of whatever is left of a particular stand. The land Bayroot owns has been thinned and partially cut numerous times in the last 40+ years. You can only thin a stand so often before you have to reset the clock. You use the term “destructive clear cutter”, but do you know for a fact they are destructive? Bayroot lands are certified through SFI and FSC, third-party independent auditors, and Bayroot managers are held to a higher standard than almost all landowners in Maine. Sounds like Yale is setting the bar pretty high.
Yes, clearcuts may be ugly immediately after the harvest (that is a personal opinion of most), but we are lucky in the northeast, we have natural regeneration that grows back almost immediately. Ten years after a clearcut there will often be more than 2000 trees per acre growing. Numerous studies show clearcutting benefits many forms of wildlife. As the forest grows the animal species that benefit often change, so throughout the rotation of a stand the stand will benefit almost all species found in Maine.
Especially species like the spruce budworm.
It is hard to grow 2000 trees in a clear cut when it is embedded in concrete with a 450′ steel tower perched on top of the cement! It is also hard to grow new trees under the weight of all the gravel used in all of the access roads, and far be it to let any new tree growth encroach upon the swath cuts needed for all those useless transmission lines.

Hear,hear.
He must have some inside info that the green bubble is about to burst.
First the laptop.
Then the mountain top.
Now the D.C. Hill top.
The man belongs in the big top, possibly even the big house.
AMEN!
Shows me who he is and that he is serious about his commitment. We need more people like him. Am disappointed with all the cynicalness, yet that’s why he is running and Olympia chose not to. :) It’s a lot more fun to see the best in folks.
Money corrupts. And it looks like money has corrupted Maine’s politicians and government agencies.
The example of Kurt Adams is a perfect example. He is making millions of dollars from the wind industry (First Wind) and made sure Maine has the weakest wind laws in the country – so he could profit from his utility commission job after he left office.
Kurt Adams, Balducci, and Angus King all made millions from their corrupt practices while in office and after they left office.
Maine is too good to have such slimeballs represent Mainers interests.
Money corrupts and it has corrupted the likes of Balducci, Angus King and Kurt Adams.
It time to vote out all the corrupt politcians representing the State of Maine and to have a moratorium on any new wind developments so that these slimeballs stop profiting from their corruption. Now!
Change the laws – make sure this kind of corruption never happens again!
Enforce term limits since politicians will not do it for themselves we need to vote them out. They come into office on money provided and owe. Something needs to change. Voters can help it along. Public service is not what it formerly was. Today the politician helps himself. I would love to see a line graph showing where the politicians were financially when they began their “service” and where they went from year to year. The build up would be phenomenal and not due to the new salary. Even Snowe is leaving a multimillionaire.
One term only , social security as a retirement plan , the same health plan they just voted in for us and minimum wage while they are in office for all political positions. We also should outlaw lobbiests and PAC’s. It’s way past time to take back America !
This is how a person with integrity acts. Two votes from my house.
PLEASE! Do not use the word integrity with anguish king. The very people that was standing in front of machinery to stop the wind power. Are now supporting him.Democrats are wishi-washi little creatures .How many millions have poured into anguish’s pocket from rate payers? That is the definition of integrity if you vote dem. After all they are the party of public money in private pockets.
Greed knows no party affiliation.
Ah but socialism does it seems !
{ Blind Trust }
The trust would shield King from information about the identity of investments
Now you see me,
Now you Dont!
New definition of the term ” blind trust ” : the faith that the last group of folks who voted him in still cling to !
Sounds to me that he’s simply trying to be above board with his financials prior to his election. Besides he probably needed to sell his stake anyways to raise money to buy new drapes for his office in Washington. New drapes are really expensive these days!
Expensive??
Pfffffttt!
Taxpayers have plenty of money.
Only trouble, there are not so many taxpayers anymore.
Drapes ARE expensive these days, thanks to folks like you who put financial morons like Bernanke and Obama in charge….
Of course he did!
Obama’s man will never get my vote he had his chance….all hes out for is the money.
The really sad thing is that many potentially good candidates and some bad ones withdrew from the race once he announced his candidacy , it looks as if he’s still got some folks fooled !
Angus King has to explain the death and destruction resulting from the massive wind spill caused by the leakage from the Midwestern windmills when he debates and those lives will be on his hands.
The land left behind after a turbine is removed will never be able to produce tar or sludge, ruined forever. Once the destruction of our relations with OPEC due to wind power is found out he will be run out of Maine on a rail.
Pathetic simplicity and poor analogy…got wind?
You are right, but you missed the underlying meaning, accurate satire using the tools of the ignorant.
And what is a leech?
An organism that obtains its substanance from the essence of its host.
This definition also applies to Mr. King.
The wind industry is comprised of liars and deceivers, and is a useless waste of taxpayer dollars.
It is no wonder therefore , that Mr. King and his son have been part of that scam.
Got to love BDN ditching the original headline that said King sold his wind investments. I guess someone poked the editor and reminded him that they are in the tank for King. Get used to pro King articles all through November, until he loses.
Exactly.
I noticed that too. Absolutely shameful. But get ready folks!
Maine , one of the most corrupt states in the nation, with the likes of Mr. King leading the pack.
Maine falls short on accountability, transparency,

Because slimeballs like Angus King, Kurt Adams, Rep. Hinck,Rep Fitts,
Rep.Du Hoax and others know the non-rules, and self-serve at the corrupt trough.
Having Stevie Wonder as your broker means nothing..Phony baloney….
Sending this guy to DC is like putting the fox in the chicken coop. DOH………..
“Republics are created by the virtue, public spirit, and
intelligence of the citizens. They fall, when the wise are banished from
the public councils, because they dare to be honest, and the profligate
are rewarded, because they flatter the people, in order to betray
them.” –Joseph Story, Commentaries on the Constitution, 1833
They fail because of scoundrels like Angus King, who are adept at deceiving the public, and because the press does not seek the facts.
Same was true for….we’ll I wouldn’t exactly call Olympia a fox !
At least that is more than Romney is willing to do !
Yeah where have we heard that old saw before.
Update March 20, King has transferred his stake in his wind energy company to his business partner…. BEFORE placing his assets in a blind trust. No matter how “blind” his trust, it doesn’t cover the assets of his friends and business associates.
Does anyone here believe that this one-percenter will be truly “blind” to how his finances are doing??
King is a government made millionaire which is why he wants to get elected. He wants to be a billionaire. Surely people can see through this mans greed.
He sees the BIG cookie jar and his hand is twitching uncontrollably.
We virtually don’t burn any oil in Maine or the U.S. for the most part to make electricity.
Less than 2%.
Nor do we drive or heat with electricity.
King spewed the myth that wind would get us off oil.
In selling his snake oil, this taxpayer pickpocket told Maine we were the “Saudi Arabia of Wind”. In fact, that has been said to at least 14 other states. It’s from the wind industry playbook of shamelessness.
Maine is 89% below the national average in terms of per capita land based wind resource.
The data backing up this statement is right here:
http://www.windtaskforce.org/profiles/blogs/a-letter-to-the-legislature
Blind trust, does that mean he just does not know how much he is making till he is done Congress?
I don’t consider King corrupt, just biased towards the left.
Isn’t it a shame we can’t find any legitimate candidates within this state to run for the open Senatorial post? Myabe it’s because of what was reported earlier today, that out of 50 states, Maine ranks 46th in political transparency, ethics, etc. We need to strengthen our ethics laws for all Maine politicain’s at every level. We have to start some where.
Independent, Democrat, or ex governor. Angus King is going to be our next Senator from Maine because the Republicans have destroyed their image, sold their ideals, killed the tea party, and seriously POed enough voters to guarantee him a win.
I would have preferred a progressive Democrat but they see the writing on the wall.
Unless some scandal comes out like King hiring his family for government jobs, defrauding the tax payer using tree growth, or mistakenly overcharging medicaid a million dollars………………………….Oh, sorry, there are a lot who already voted for those types, maybe he does have to worry a little, laughing all the way to office, bit.
Go LePage, Go Poloquin, anywhere but Maine, just go.
If you trust Angus King , you have to be blind(drunk).
Angus , when are you bringing your Winnebago to Washington County?
You know , to “camp” in the Wal-Mart parking lot.
Love to visit with you.
King as an independent will wield no power. Feel good politician who covers his bases well. We should vote for a card carrying socialistic Democrat, at least we would know what we were getting.
Blind trust ? Not quite sure what that is but I bet Chellies husband might have something to do with it. If I remember right doesnt he lead a hedge fund group?
That wind project will be a drop in the bucket compared to what he’ll make off legal insider trading in congress.
So are his investments sold or is it just someone else handling them? if so, then any money voted to wind power goes to him (or his son) and he only sees the deposit receipts?
How appropriate , putting Maines investments in a blind trust while blinding the taxpayers of maine with blind explanations from a blind leader !
Notice Angus did not say he “sold” his interest to Rob G, he transferred it. That way he can legally push his greedy windsprawl agenda should he be elected, and claim no conflict of interest. It is classic Angus BS, carefully covering his tracks with legal manure.
6.
Is
it true that in 2002 you
promoted the Tumbledown Conservation effort while
maine governor and at
the ceremony you said, “ “Western Maine’s panoramic vistas in
the Mt. Blue and Tumbledown region will be protected for future generations
and I’m grateful for the many players who made today’s exciting announcement
possible.”
7.
Is it true that all of the 22
Record Hill turbines will now be highly visible feature on the landscape when
viewed from the peak of Tumbledown Mt?
Screw all green energy. Every bit of it.
Let’s stay on the Middle East oil teat.
Yaaah!
THAT’S worked out so well for us.
