PORTLAND, Maine — A man who participated in the OccupyMaine protest in Portland has been sentenced to a year in prison for hitting another protester in the head with a hatchet.

Christopher Schisler was sentenced to 8½ years in prison, with all but one year suspended, after pleading guilty Wednesday to aggravated assault. A criminal mischief charge was dismissed.

Authorities say the dispute in Lincoln Park started when Alan Porter began banging a drum around 7 a.m. on Nov. 18 to wake up fellow campers. The 35-year-old Schisler broke the drum with a hatchet, Porter threw the drum at Schisler, who hit Porter with the blunt side of the hatchet.

The Portland Press Herald reports that Porter told the judge he had no ill will toward Schisler.

Schisler’s attorney says his client is remorseful.

  1. So rapes, assaults, attempted murders. For all the hatred people show the tea party, these kind of things dont seem to happen at them. I always thought liberals were a peace loving people, and the tea party people were the bad ones. Strange.

    1. The exception isn’t the rule. Unless you want it to be, because then the Tea Party is just a bunch of ignorant racists.

        1. That comment is relevant how? The point is that you don’t get to take the worst of the bunch and claim it is representative of the whole. If OWS protestors are rapists, then Tea Partiers are ignorant racists. You can’t have it both ways, unless you’re a hypocrite.

          1. Remember what you say. The liberals sure were quick to paint all republicans with the Rush brush after his comments. Go back and take a look. The truth is the liberals are great at dishing it out but sure have a hard time taking it, and that goes for all liberals not some.

Regarding OWS, I sure am glad Obama bailed out some of my pals on Wall Street of they might have had to go to a smaller jet, heck, some of them were thinking of leasing one vs. purchase. It is a good thing the president gave 787 billion to the big banks and auto companies or some of my pals would have had a really hard time buying that extra home in the Hamptons. I am not kidding either, it was close.

      1. Care to cite a few examples of Tea Party folks being racist?  It seems like the only claims of racism I hear are from the “tolerant” left.  But the news articles are all run about the left being violent and intolerant. Strange… Can you explain this to me, I must just be confused, surely you can help clear it up.

        1. Dude, read my comments before replying. I didn’t say that. I said, if you’re going to pluck one isolated example of one group and try and claim that they represent everyone, you have to be consistent. That means, if OWS protestors are rapistists (or whatever) because one of them was convicted of rape, then the Tea Party is racist.

That is unfair and doesn’t make sense and that’s my entire point. So quit trying to criticize me for something I didn’t say. So, if you are confused, try reading a bit more carefully.

          1. My point remains.   The number of violent/aggressive OWS people and stories far outweigh the number of Tea Party police involvements.  How many times were Tea Party rallies broken up by police. How many Tea Party people turned a police car into a toilet?  How many Tea Party people attacked police, passersby, or each other? How many Tea Party protests involve setting up camp in a private park and ruining it?Answer that, “dude”

          2. Good points well thought out and spot on.How can anybody be expected to be taken seriously by starting a conversation with the word “dude”.Wheres grammar girl when you need her

          3. Fine, you can make those claims all you want about OWS, but don’t be screeching bloody murder when claims are made about the Tea Party, dude.

      2. I will have to tell my Latin American wife what you think of her. Im sure she will think that is quite funny.

      3. fwteagle and I have,  just today,  engaged each other through the Bangor Daily,  here tonight, 3/22/12,  and the statements I have made,  along with fwteagles responses,  while in my spam, are absent from the BDN site. Weird,  Good day sir.  I will save the spam mail.

    2. I was in D.C last year when they were offloading a bunch of “Baggers” off tour busses to see Glen Becks rally.  The reason you dont hear about them fighting is because they were all over 65 years old, mostly chubby, and enjoying the benifits of socialized Medicare.

  2. And meanwhile the guy choking, chasing, and throwing around the kid in Houlton gets 5 days……

  3. Please feel free to find any links to racism at tea party events.  If you cannot, feel free to look up anti semitism at occupy protests, the latter wont be hard to find.

Ill let some of the libs on here in on a little secret. It is possible to disagree with Obamas POLICIES and not be racist. Shocking Im sure, but true none the less.

Also, just so you know, everytime you pull the race card, you encourage racism.

    1. Enough with your smear attacks. Why don’t you respond to the sentiment of their message instead of trying to paint the entire bunch because of a few bad apples? They’re obviously not anti-semitic as protests were postponed on occasions for Jewish holidays and some even had Rabbis come. You’re just repeating fringe propaganda and it’s not productive — it’s wrong.

You don’t want the “race card” being pulled, then don’t enage in the similar behavior yourself. Otherwise, you’re just a hypocrite.

Also, calling out and denouncing racism does NOT encourage more racism. That’s such a ridiculous assertion.

      1. Its not smear attacks. There have been multiple assaults, a few rapes etc. Yet all you hear from libs is how the tea partiers are so bad. An offer was made by a journalist not long ago to pay $100,000 for proof of racism at a tea party event….no one collected.

As for calling out racism. Disagreeing with Obama is not racist, but if you do, you will at some point be called a racist. What is there to denounce? Cant prove a negative. So yes, it does encourage it.

Theres a wonderful video out of people dumping a bucket of feces in the lobby of chase bank. It goes along well with the ones smearing it in police cars, and that fact that some places the cleanups required haz-mat suits. Those d*mn “baggers”….no wait, that was ows. I get confused

        1. Dude, there absolutely has been racism at Tea Party events. Just quit trying to act like the group you like is perfect angels and those you disagree with are hell bent demons. Don’t you see how ridiculous and immature that analysis is? You’re confused because you see only what you want to see and it’s pathetic. You highlight the worst in those you disagree with and ignore the bad behavior of your own. Again, pathetic.

Demanding Obama’s birth certificate seems racist to me, telling him to go back to “Kenya” seems racist to me, questioning his Christianity seems racist to me, etc. All disagreement isn’t racist – you’re right, but the fact remains, some of it is.

          1. Well you should look up the $100,000 offer for proof of racism at these events, and cash in.

Demanding to see his birth certificate is not racist. I had to provide mine to get my job. Does that make my employer racist?

Im not saying there are no racists out there, I AM saying to the best of my knowledge, no proof of it at a tea party has been shown. Maybe we could compare arrest numbers. OWS vs Tea party? I dont know the numbers, but if I was a betting man…..

          2. First of all, you’re either lying or misinformed about the $100,000 offer, because it wasn’t for any example of racism. It was for a video of a politician being called the n— word.

And if you are unable to to google for some racism at Tea Party events, I’ll be glad to help you out. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&sugexp=frgbld&gs_nf=1&cp=11&gs_id=t&xhr=t&q=racist+tea+party+signs&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&biw=1048&bih=569&wrapid=tljp1332431387554020&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=U0prT8eJHojm2QXRmdH-BQ or just type “racist tea party signs” into Google images.

You ARE saying there isn’t racism in the Tea Party. It’s ridiculous and obviously untrue.

But regardless — who cares? Why are you so incapable oif discussion the message of the movements? Why must you resort to trying to defame groups to make your point? If I was a betting man, I’d bet that you don’t actually have a point. You don’t care to inform yourself either. Once again, pathetic.

          3. “Why are you so incapable oif discussion the message of the movements?”

            Ill discuss the messages.

Tea party. “stop wasting my money”

            OWS “give us free stuff”

Like it or not, most of the OWS dont even know what the hell they are protesting. I will admit though, the tea party should have exhisted long before obama. The movements are probably about equal on racism, but OWS is way ahead on violent crime. Just saying

          4. I’m not disagreeing with you,  but when you start a statement with the word “dude”,   to me,  you loose some credibility.

          5. When you constantly ignore reality, use stereotypes and lies as basis for your arguments, etc. — you have no credibilty. Me saying dude is irrelevant to the discussion at hand. It seems to me there are desperate attempts to change the subject going on here.

          6. It is relevant.  Your presenting your point of veiw,  and the words you use are very important.  Misspelled word and things are irrelevant,  but starting opinions out with “dude”,  doesn’t make you sound intelligent.  But….that’s just my opinion,  I welcome yours.

          7. Follow the string of comments. If word choice is important, so is sentiment and more so. The sentiment of the person I’m talking with isn’t a positive, truthful or respectful one. You can obsess about “dude” all you want, I would tend to agree with you, but not if you’re going to conveniently ignore the sentiment as well.

          8. Like I said,  I don’t disagree with you. I totally agree,  there is no “all”, or “everyone”,  in anything.  But I think you get my gist.

          9. I get your gist, but it’s a pretty selective criticism given the discussion began by denouncing someone engaging in terrible stereotyping and smear attacks.

          10. I see, so you are the judge and jury on what is and isnt racist. You cannot and will not ever produce ONE link proving racism amongst the TP, but because you heard it on MSNBC that the TP is racist that to you is “proof” right? I think YOU are the racist because YOU and the left are the ones always bringing up race. I HATE Oblamer with all my being, but I am still  happy that someone of color was elected to the office. You want to see an actual racist? Go look in the mirror.

          11. Sorry, I’m not a racist. Denouncing racism is not itself racism. That’s a ridiculous assertion. By the way, go to Google Images and type in “Tea Party Signs” and try and tell me that some of those aren’t racist.

  4. From oct of last year.

OWS – number of days 40 – number of arrests 2511 – # of arrests per day 62 – number of public defecations 1 – number of rapes 4 – cost to taxpayers $3.2 million in new york alone

Tea party – number of days 984 – number of arrests 0 – number of arrests per day 0 – number of public defecations 0 – number of rapes 0 – cost to taxpayers $0

      1. Mine too! I guess they don’t really like facts. I guess you could say a large percentage of OWS folks were law breaking scumbags. It looks like it is a good thing they are all anti gun. With rap sheets like that they could be really dangerous. The again, one would have to be sober to hit anything so I’m not worried.
