BETHEL, Maine — Authorities in Oxford County and Lewiston are looking for a 62-year-old woman with medical conditions last seen nearly two weeks ago at the Vernon Street home she was relocating to in Bethel.
Capt. Hart Daley of the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office said Fay E. Johnson is considered missing and endangered because of a serious medical condition. Johnson is described as being 5 feet, 7 inches tall, weighing about 140 pounds with blonde hair and blue eyes. She wears a medical alert bracelet with the word “pacemaker” engraved on it.
Daley said Sunday that Johnson was last seen by neighbors in Bethel more than two weeks ago. He said she was in the process of moving from a Bates Street residence in Lewiston to a house in Bethel. He said the last confirmed day anyone from her family had contact with her was around March 7.
Daley said Johnson’s landlord in Bethel — who was helping her move furniture and boxes — alerted authorities along with another neighbor around March 12 because of a dog left at Johnson’s new rental home. Daley said the landlord went to check on Johnson once or twice and saw the dog in the house, but assumed she was just packing and moving more items from Lewiston.
Daley said the landlord later talked with neighbors and realized that Johnson had not returned to the residence for at least five days. On March 12, the landlord contacted the animal control officer, who removed the pet from the home, and then contacted authorities.
Daley said Sunday evening that authorities in Oxford County spent the day searching the woods surrounding the Bethel home with Maine game wardens. The sheriff’s office is also working with the Lewiston Police Department and will meet Monday with Maine State Police about the case.
Daley said Johnson’s car, a green 2004 Subaru Forester with Maine vanity registration SASSYFJ, is also missing.
Anyone with information, or who may have seen Johnson, is asked to call the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office at 800-733-1421 or dial 911.

Where’d the mug shot come from ?
I hope this woman is found safe.
And soon.
I wish they didn’t wait so long to make the public aware there may be a helpless adult to watch for.
At least they included a picture.
Half the time they ask for your help looking for whomever
and we should look for ” a male wearing a dark hoody” or
look for ” a car with Maine plates” ??
Its a start.
You people are idiots! A woman is missing.
C’mon BDN, search your archives.
Does it really matter that she has a mug shot? She is missing and unlike Whitey Bulger, People want her to be safe and sound.
It wasn’t out of a mean spirit I posted that. I just wanted to know more background. I apologize for being insensitive.
What if that was your Mother/Sister or a friend? Just because she has a mugshot does not make her guilty of anything. Many people are arrested under false pretenses post 9/11. And even if she was/is a criminal, she is sick and missing. Personally I find no humor in that. I hope and pray she is found safe. Lewiston these days can be dangerous.
I agree with you that some people can be very insensitive. I have to say, it is sad that family members where not in better contact. The lady has serious health issues that are life threatening. I can only speak for my self but I would know the very day, if my mother went missing. I think it is so important to check in on people that live alone. Just a quick phone call could have (maybe) alerted someone sooner. I hope that she will be found safe and I am glad someone rescued the dog. Wouldn’t neighbors have heard the poor dog barking? I know…. more and more these days, people mind their own business. It’s not like it used to be, when family and neighbors watched out for each other. Sad state of affairs, these days.
well said. Ignorance on here!
right? maybe the mug shot was the most recent pic anyone had of her
A lot of people missing in Maine lately..
Yep. I’m not going near the woods. They seem to be swallowing people in one bite.
Maybe the BDN should use photoshop from now on to blur out parts of a photo that make it obvious we’re looking at a mug shot. Unless the person being sought is a fugitive from the law, there’s no value in letting the public know a person’s past legal troubles.
StuckinNC stated that the missing woman had been arrested after 9/11 for some sick criminal falsification of some sort.
no he didn’t.
Hope and pray she is found safe.
Could be this poor lady got confused due to some associated problem with her pacemaker. I hope she is okay and that that Subaru will soon be located by someone. Seems many folks in Maine get lost for one reason or the other.
