PORTLAND, Maine — Operators of Portland’s first medical marijuana dispensary announced Wednesday they quietly have begun serving patients at the new 685 Congress St. location.

The 6,500-square-foot facility is one of four dispensaries opened or slated to open this year by Wellness Connection of Maine under the provisions of a 2009 state law allowing eight medical marijuana distribution sites across Maine. Wellness Connection of Maine already opened or has permits for dispensaries in Thomaston, Hallowell and Brewer.

Rebecca DeKeuster, executive director of Wellness Connection of Maine, said her organization is opting for a low-key opening at its Portland facility, saying in a statement that no grand opening is planned and that an open house for community leaders and “educational events” are scheduled for later in the year.

In contrast, the group held a higher profile preopening open house at its 2,400-square-foot Hallowell site in January. DeKeuster said the organization is holding off on making a bigger splash in Portland until the interior work on the building is complete.

“We’re not fully built out yet [in Portland] and the space, it’s gorgeous, but we’re not quite there,” DeKeuster told the Bangor Daily News on Wednesday.

The proposed Portland location came under fire in late 2011 when Maine Medical Use of Marijuana Program Manager John Thiele expressed concerns about the facility’s planned “vapor lounge,” where patients could sit and breathe in marijuana-based medicinal compounds while avoiding the respiratory and carcinogenic risks associated with smoking.

Wellness Connection of Maine, which previously did business as Northeast Patients Group, dropped plans for the vapor lounge in response to Thiele’s concerns the room would become a hangout.

The facility has opened with a dispensary, rooms for services such as acupuncture and counseling, administrative offices, a library and community room for the aforementioned educational events. Renovations to the Congress Street structure, located behind Local 188 restaurant, cost the group more than $150,000, Wellness Connection stated.

In a statement released by Wellness Connection of Maine, Portland dispensary manager Diane Schinella said she expects the location to serve more than 100 patients in its first few months of operation, with plans to hire as many as eight employees there within the first six months.

Only qualified patients are allowed to enter the dispensaries, which are state regulated and permitted. Patients can seek doctors’ prescriptions of marijuana to help ease the pain of chronic illnesses.

DeKeuster said Wednesday the organization initially is just seeing new patients at the site who prescheduled intake appointments and hopes to open up for drop-ins on Monday.

“Some people are new to the location, and some are new to the medicine,” she said. “We’ve had a waiting list, people calling ahead and making sure they’ve had appointments set up.”

  1. Maine child began melting in boiling water as man smoked POT

“In May 2009,  Christopher Riley, 31, of Searsport, ran a hot bath for his 3-year-old stepdaughter. When the girl yelled “ouch ouch ouch” he put his hand over her mouth to keep her quiet. He then kept her sitting in the scalding tub while he shampooed her hair and left her there while he went outside to smoke pot”

Eventually he pulled the 3-year-old out of the tub and put clothes on her.The 3-year-old’s skin peeled off with the pants. The girl will be scarred for life and will need skin grafts for the next 16 years…..Riley shown “no empathy” for the little girl.

    1. This has alot less to do with Marijuana and more to do with that mans sick mental problem he had prior to smoking pot! You know what alcoholics do? What pot put her in the water? pot did this right just like a gun kills people!!! People do these things with or without help all this is is using pot as the scapegoat and not holding the man accountable for his own actions. He put her in the tub and then smoked a joint. sounds backwards to me what your thinking! And let me guess Zimmerman is not a murder. He would have done this with or without pot! PILLS PILLS PILLS I BET!

        1. Medical marijuana doesn’t even necessarily get people high; there ARE weed based products that are designed specifically to alleviate pain with little to no high.

Blaming weed for everything the way you have here, when multiple other issues were also present, calls into question your sober judgement.

      1.  Riley had pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated assault, assault on a child and trafficking in oxycodone. See there is the truth PILLS its always PILLS and you people blame pot no wonder he could not feel how hot the water was he was on one of the strongest painkillers around. Quit blaming pot. We all know its those devil pills that mess you up. Not natural put here by god not man Medical Marijuana. 4000 years and still growing.

    1. Lying once can be an error.  Lying three + times makes you a serial liar…

A breathalyzer test registered Meyer’s blood-alcohol content at 0.154, which under Arizona law constitutes an Extreme DUI.”

    1. Lying by omission is still lying…
       ”
was suffering from mental problems and had been on medication”

    1. The article says illegal AND legal drugs.

And weed shows up in one’s system weeks after it was last used.

      Try again.

    1. Times are changing, it is the result of the Dumbing down of the United States..
About 1980, efforts begin  to dumb down the American public.
30 years later, the mainstream public sees nothing wrong to legalize one more mind alternating drug is a direct result of Dumbing down process

WW2 was the last time the US has won a war. All wars ever since have been with half arse 3rd world countries with half-arse armies.  This country is now weak, full of drug loving, dumbed down, party people. The next time the US goes to war with China or another world power, we will lose.

      1.  That’s so funny, and wrong, at least on this issue. The exact opposite has occurred with marijuana. More people are more educated about it than ever now. We have gone past the “Reefer Madness” smear campaigns. That was the dumbing down in this situation. Make them fear it, then they won’t learn about it.

As for those “mind altering drugs”, if the Greatest Generation didn’t have them, we never would have won the war. Kind of difficult to fight and win a war without Morphine…

  6. Good for them, I wish em well. Its nice to see some progress, its kind of sad its taken this long. Think about all the innocent people who have had their lives ripped apart by prohibition. Where would his county be if Steve Jobs or Bill Gates had been caught smoking marijuana? How would the world look without “Apple” or “Microsoft”? Think about all he future doctors, inventors, teachers, that have had their lives cut short because they got causght eating or smoking a nontoxic plant. Its incredible. Thanks to the internet we are now seeing the disastrous effects of this asinine policy. Its the equivalent of smashing your head with a hammer because you want to rid yourself of a headache.

  7. How soon before these drug dealers start getting robbed like a Rite Aid
    on Saturday Night ??
