SULLIVAN, Maine — A Hancock couple was killed Saturday morning when the car they were in crossed into the path of an oncoming vehicle on Route 1 in Sullivan, according to Maine State Police.

The driver, 59-year-old Cynthia Johnson, and her 58-year-old husband, George Johnson were killed instantly in the crash, according to a press release from Maine Department of Public Safety Spokesman Stephen McCausland.

Troopers said Johnson’s car veered into the opposite lane about 8:30 a.m. and slammed into a car driven by Melissa Dominy, 44, of Bar Harbor, who was flown by LifeFlight to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with multiple injuries, the release states.

That section of Route 1 was closed for several hours following the accident.

The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office assisted troopers with the investigation.

There was no explanation why Johnson’s car crossed the centerline, according to the release.

  1. I’m glad to see that BDN is showing more tactfulness than Ellsworth American, who posted disturbing photos of the crash within an hour of the accident.  Very sad for all involved.

    1. at least the bdn  did somthing  right this time instead of constantly screwing up like they have done lately

      1.  My guess is BDN didn’t have any pictures as this was a Hancock County crash and Ellsworth American probably had a photographer there.

    2. i agree with you , it was very tacky as well as cold blooded in what they did .
i read through the posts on the facebook page and folks were ragin over it .
it has been since removed .

      1. I say show all of them. If they make a few drivers stop and think about how quick and easy you can be killed in a car, then it will be worth it.

        1. I agree to an extent, however, in that time frame not all of the immediate families had probable been notified yet. Personally, I wouldn’t want to find out by seeing a picture of a loved ones crashed car on a website before someone had a chance to get a hold of me…

      2. Not tacky at all.  Humans have survived on this planet where stronger creatures have failed, because they get information about what happens when others do stupid things (like crossing a center line into oncoming traffic.)  Perhaps the view of this accident will help just one other person avoid a similar fate.

      3. does anyone out there know if this couple was Cindy and Dennis Johnson, formerly of the  Steuben and Milbridge area?

  2. If these folks have children and other close relatives and freinds, I hope they take some comfort as time goes on in knowing that their loved ones are in heaven together.

      1. Harry, what we know and what we beleive are two diffrent things. Perhpas I’ve overstepped my bounds.

  3. Condolences to family and friends….Live and Love every day like it’s your last because you never know…Peace

  4. Seat belts DO save lives (speaking from experience here), but this article does not speak to weather these folks were or were not wearing their seatbelts.

          1. …Just what I thought, “whether,” but I don’t get why people expect posters to have correct spelling & grammar when the writers and editors can’t get it right…

    1. If my sister had a seat belt on, when in an accident a few years back, she would have been cut in two. Driving is dangerous, seatbelts are an option.
