BREWER, Maine — A local 18-year-old used a fake identification card to purchase alcohol and then threw a party last week that got him arrested, Brewer police Capt. Jason Moffitt said Monday.

Mark Moellentin was arrested about 12:15 a.m. April 16 and charged with allowing minors to consume liquor.

Police were called to his North Main Street home for the report of a loud party. “They could see underage people drinking through the window,” Moffitt said. “They were playing drinking games.”

Moellentin’s parents “were unaware he was having a party,” the police captain said.

He also was charged with possession of a false ID card that said he was old enough to purchase alcohol, Moffitt said.

None of the underage people drinking at the party was charged, the police captain said.

Another local teen was charged with an alcohol offense last week after police in Holden charged him with drunken driving. The 17-year-old Holden resident and Brewer High School student, who was not identified because he is a juvenile, told police he went to a party and then attempted to drive home and crashed his truck. He was not injured but was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol.

  1. So what 18 year old male in Maine hasn’t done this?

Innovative anyway, especially if he charged a premium for the booze.

I think we should all obey the law but personally I believe that if a man is old enough to pick up a weapon and fight for his country or be drafted he should be able to have a beer. I think the law should be changed to reflect that. Move the draft age up or drinking age down.

    1. I’m sure a lot of 18 year old males have not used a fake ID to purchase alcohol. When I was 18 I was working and if I wasn’t working I was either at the firehouse or the ice rink.

As for the law the drinking age used to be 18 and even when it was changed to 21 those in the military could still consume alcohol while on base but that law was changed as well.

You also have to remember that people join the military by choice these days. While the draft can be reinstated I highly doubt it will ever happen.

    2. Maybe it had something to do with the underage kids drinking It seems to me when the brownville mother let some kids drink the DA. gave her 5 years.

  2.  None of the underage people drinking at the party were charged, the police captain said.

    Why?

  3. Why did the Brewer police decide not to charge anyone else? Prominent families’ kids? athletes?  Sounds like the old boys network in action. Perhaps the media should investigate?

    1. Take a look into the cashier that sold them the booze as well. Fake ID or not. Did he try to pass it off to the cops as well or was it just in possession when he was booked. Cashiers who sell alcohol have to go thru specific training which includes how to spot a fake ID. Either this cashier isnt equipped to do his job or he’s slippin booze to minors. It aint hard to tell, I’ve done the job myself.

    2. Their parents would have been notified, is there any worse punishment?   Technically there may not have been enough evidence in terms of them having drinks in hand, or an obvious enough appearance of intoxication to charge with a crime.  D.A.’s make decisions to charge people (not cops), so playing the good-ol-boys-network card and claiming that they might have been “privileged” or “prominent” is pretty baseless, ridiculous and out of line.  You’re accusing cops of dereliction of duty with no hard facts at all.

      1. Cop makes the decision to charge of not usually the DA. make the choice to prosecute  . Otherwise cop could not make arrest. We do not have any hard facts but it says they were drinking . Why they where not charged IE. Summons or arrested is a legit question. Ya thing if the men in the Greenlief case came from the other side of the tracks they would not have been arrested that night? If they had nothing to hide why did they run????

      2. It has happened before. I have been at a place where police condoned a 15 year old relative being drunk even supplied the alcohol. Thought it was so funny.

      3. not enough evidence?? “They could see underage people drinking through the window,” Moffitt said. “They were playing drinking games.”…… sh*t, seems pretty cut and dry to me
