MILLINOCKET, Maine — Tractor Supply Co. and a California-based landowner signed a 10-year lease Friday to bring the nation’s largest retail farm and ranch supply chain to the Northern Plaza Shopping Center on Route 11 early this fall.
“After a year and a half of negotiations, I am very excited that Tractor Supply is signing a long-term lease and demonstrating their confidence in the future of the economy of the Katahdin Region,” said Dan Corcoran, a broker with North Woods Real Estate who is handling the deal for Northern Plaza owner EnviroFinance Group of Sacramento.
Enviro-Finance Vice President Brian Rhoades called Tractor Supply “a wonderful addition” to the region already buoyed by Cate Street Capital’s plans announced this week to turn the Katahdin Avenue paper mill site into a nationally advertised industrial park anchored by the New Hampshire-based investor’s torrefied wood facility.
Tractor Supply Co. “will not only make life easier for Millinocket residents in terms of improving accessibility to shopping, but it will increase traffic to the shopping center’s other tenants,” Rhoades said Friday.
A spokesman for Tractor Supply said he would have an announcement of the deal and more details early next week.
Michael F. Graham, media relations specialist for Tractor Supply, has said the company hopes to open a storefront store at the plaza sometime this summer. Negotiations between the landowner at the former Ames store in the Northern Plaza Shopping Center and Michigan-based DMK Development, the retailer’s preferred developer, went on for more than a year.
Most of the delays were attributed to work needed on the property and Tractor Supply’s desire to do the job economically.
Aside from about a half-dozen thrift stores and a Family Dollar outlet, the region lacks a large-scale general supply retailer and a standalone clothing store. The closest are in Lincoln, about 32 miles from the plaza.
Based in Brentwood, Tenn., Tractor Supply offers men’s and women’s clothing, home improvement items, livestock supplies, welding and metalworking items, and sporting goods equipment, particularly snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles.
Its stores in Maine include outlets in Augusta, Bangor, Brunswick, Dover-Foxcroft, Houlton, Lewiston, Oxford, Presque Isle, Sanford, Scarborough, Skowhegan and Wilton, according to its website. A store in Windham is under contract to open this spring, company officials have said.
EnviroFinance will have contractors start remodeling work on the former Ames Plaza in two weeks. The owner is required to pave the parking lot, upgrade the building’s utilities and put a new roof on the building, among other things, Corcoran said.
Corcoran said that work would likely take two to three months, with Tractor Supply needing another four to six weeks to turn its portion of the former Ames shopping store into one of its stores.
“That’s just a rough estimate based on some calculations that we had, some of the planning that we have done over the last year,” Corcoran said.
Cate Street’s plans and Tractor Supply’s interest in Millinocket have spurred inquiries from three other national and local “family” retailers, Rhoades said.

I would like to thank Tractor Supply for working so dilently on this project and not giving up. Nice positive news for a change. I think this will help Millnocket out. Thanks Tractor Supply
how can Millinocket have this store and Machias not have it. machias has more surrounding population and far more tourist driving to Roosevelt’s park, Quoddy head park, and eastport with very few shopping options. The family dollar said machias was there best preforming store in maine. If any machias leaders are paying attention they need to try to bring in this store.
Simple. Not much more than 2,000 people in Machias. Millinocket/East Millinocket/Medway has close to 10,000.
Tourists driving to Campobello don’t stop at Tractor Supply to buy stuff.
the machias area has at least a third of Washington counties population within easy driving distance thats at least the 10,000 people.Theres a big increase in summer population in the area. Im pretty sure people who go hiking or camping would want to stop for supplies.
Hey joe when was the last time you had a positive comment. Do you just simply hate everything. Great news for the katahdin region.
I drive through Machias on my way to rhe Cutler area to hike fairly often. What would hikers or vacationers buy in a Tractor Supply Store? Tractor Supply is really geared toward farmers, horse owners, and rugged outdoor wear. Three or 4 months of summer population isn’t going to entice this store. Ellsworth my friend, Ellsworth.
Tractor Supply has the appearance of growing wherever and whenever they can. I fear they will end up like Krispy Kreme.
Nice news to hear re: the business and hopefully will draw others to the region also…..Millinocket is slowly making a come-back…..
Bad move, this store belongs in Medway. More people from Lincoln, Mattawamkeag, and North would use this store. People in Millinocket are too tight with any money that they have to spend it on dog food and baby chickens. I give this store 4 years.
Mutt Glidden is a name I haven’t heard long time! Was a nice guy and a hard woods worker.
it can’t be the name because this guy is a bonehead.
He was a very hard worker, he new his way around the wood yard. We used to visit him on the weekends. we brought him treats from my grandmother. funny to here someone else knew him. This store still belongs in Medway. medway people are the only ones hardworking enough to know what to do with the supplies from “Tractor Supply”
read the article again, i don’t think anyone from TSC gives two $*@$ what Mutt Glidden has to say. TSC signs lease for outlet in Millinocket!!!! Right place for it.
Nothing belongs in Medway, no one wants to live there, visit there or shop there. Sorry to burst your bubble.
Thank You Tractor Supply and Cates Street, Millinocket is rebuilding and the future looks bright !
LOL
Based in Brentwood, Tenn., Tractor Supply offers men’s and women’s clothing, home improvement items, livestock supplies, welding and metalworking items, and sporting goods equipment, particularly snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles. TRACTOR SUPPLY DOES NOT SELL SNOWMOBILES!
Guess what Chummy, I believe they’re smart enough to figure out what they need to sell. If you don’t think they did a demographic study of the area before even initiating negotiations with the a–wipe that owns the only mall in town then you are just as ignorant as your comment.
Should do really well in that area. Great store.
Hey Chummy jj16oz TSC is a Big Box store and I happen to be an employee of TSC! TSC does not and will not sell SNOWMOBILES periode! So please when you go to TSC to pick up your new sled PLEASE contact me and I will bow at your ignorant feet.
Maybe another position is in order. Disgruntled are you? My suggestion is to start bagging at Hannaford. LOL. And if you haven’t noticed, it is April, snowsleds are packed up for the season. UR truly a funny guy/person
We will see! Chummy just use your brain. TSC does not offer a service dept. how many people will dish out lets say 10k for a sled and then call an 800# for service? And where did yo get form my reply to you that I was disgruntled? You are one Stupid horses ___ well you can fill in the blank.
Does anyone know how much rent they pay per year?
Needs to be in Medway…Hello! I95 is right there….dah!
