BANGOR, Maine — A local man who got into a fight with a 14-year-old relative by marriage and the boy’s mother on Saturday night was arrested later in Brewer after he assaulted a police officer, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said Monday.
“There was a physical confrontation between the two and she stepped in between,” the sergeant said.
James Hayes, 47, of Bangor was charged with obstructing the report of a crime and domestic violence assault by Bangor police Officer Tim Shaw at around 6:30 p.m. Saturday and felony assault on a police officer, refusing to submit to arrest and a probation violation by Brewer police Cpl. Levi Sewell later in the evening.
Details about the felony police officer assault — which could result in Hayes spending up to five years behind bars, if convicted — were not available Monday.
Hayes was booked into the Penobscot County Jail and remained in jail late Monday afternoon, a jail official said.
Hayes was convicted in August 2007 of robbery for invading a Grindstone home, pepper-spraying the owner, and then stealing cash and medications, according to court listings printed in the Bangor Daily News. He was sentenced to prison for 12 years, with all but five years suspended, and to probation for three years upon his release. At the same time, he was charged with operating a vehicle after habitual offender revocation and ordered to pay a $1,000 fine.

Mr. Hayes, do you see a better way of doing things than what you’ve been doing? Do you enjoy being beaten down? If you don’t change direction, you will end up where you’re headed.
Anyone know where this guy works?
By the looks of things its another welfare case. Work is not part of the daily thing Hayes does. Thats what police are dealing with daily.
this has nothing to do with welfare or work. This has to do with violence. Tell me where this person could find a job????????????
Lots of places Burger King, Mcdonalds, they hire, they dont discriminate
Baloney, who would hire him? It doesn’t have to be discrimmintion. Maybe he just doesn’t qualify and wouldn’t one be stupid to work for less than they get now??? YOU wouldn’t , why should he? Everyone is just trying to live, some work, some can’t, some can, some don’t. It will NEVER be a perfect world. It could be a more loving world if we got rid of GREED and HATRED.
Before i opened my own business, i used to be a manager for mcdonalds. I did all the hiring. We hired rift rafts like this. We were always told not to discriminate, he wants to work hire him, simple
What does that have to do with the price of eggs. Would you like to hire him for your company?
Eggs, you are getting closer.
Will someone tell Hayes he is to old to act like a bully. He needs to grow up now.
Its seems like he has the IQ of a carrott. Maybe to much credit.
At least a carrott knows what it’s doing. lol
Way to go James! Take on that 14 year old kid! you da man! Can’t wait to see you back in prison, another low life that is taking up space in our prison system, just pack him up and ship him off to Warren. No need to release him, he will just go back.
they’ll read about what he did and take care of him like a 14 year old boy!
The Book. Throw it quick.
Wait 1 minute, this information on the background of a person 4-5 yrs ago doesnt have anything to do with the assault on a child or police officer. The crime, that this man has been arrested for is assault. And this also doesnt have anything to do with Welfare…Assumptions by people are wrong and misleading..Get the facts people and then make your correct comments.

Just for the record; substance abuse, addiction, and domestic violence are not a sign of “welfare cases.” These problems are prevalent in all socioeconomic groups. I would like to think that when responsible adults post comments on a public forum such as this, they would be respectful and consider the fact that it is very likely that involved parties (including children) will be reading these articles and comments. My best suggestion is to only make comments that you would be proud to say in front of people (this holds true even if for some reason you choose to post as anonymous or use an alias). If every person on here making negative comments can honestly say that none of these problems have ever affected them, or anyone in their family they are very fortunate and in the almost non-existent minority in this country.
Well said! Thank you.
Could not have said it any better
1st, it never mentions anything about Welfare, shouldn’t judge unless you know the whole story and this man did great things and had turned his life completely around just because he makes mistakes does not mean he needs to be thrown under the bus by individuals who have nothing better to do then to think that he is going to see these comments.
This has nothing to do with financial status or social class, he actually has a very very good job and a family… drug addiction doesnt discriminate.
I know this family, he is a wonderful father and husband but he has struggled with alcohol and drugs for years. This whole thing got blown out of proportion, NOBODY got hurt. The courts need to stop sending people struggling with substance abuse to prison and send them to get help instead, this is why our prisons are over loaded. As for the welfare comments, what the hell does that have to do with anything?!! There are poor people who are struggling with drugs and there are millionaires struggling with it too… financial status has nothing to do with this at all!
