TURNER, Maine — A standoff that lasted more than 14 hours ended early Tuesday morning.
Few details were available, but a man who had kept police at bay was in custody and en route to a hospital at 2:25 a.m., according to the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department.
The standoff between a lone man and police started shortly before noon Monday. The man was holed up in a rented trailer behind Richardson Station on Route 4. Police did not identify the man.
The incident took place at a trailer rented by the man that is about 100 yards down a wooded road, according to witnesses at the scene. The residence is on property surrounding Richardson’s Station, a garage on Route 4.
The unidentified man was in his home when the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department was notified of an altercation he had with another man, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
McCausland said there were no hostages, although the man was believed to be armed.
Police had the scene taped off for most of the day Monday and several uniformed officers remained at the scene for most of the day and well into the night.
A state police tactical unit arrived at the scene around 1 p.m. By 6 p.m. there were more than 20 state police and sheriff deputies’ vehicles on the site, including the special services van, state and county K-9 units and Turner Rescue with an ambulance.
Later in the evening, a Turner firetruck that had been waiting a safe distance up Route 4 was also moved to the scene.
Two men at the scene said they knew the man who was keeping police at bay. One of the two men said his father was friends with the man and offered to go in and try to talk to him, but was denied by authorities.
“He’s just scared. He ain’t gonna come out,” one of the men said. “He’ll hold them off all night.”
But McCausland said authorities were handling the situation by the book and typically in situations such as a standoff, only a trained negotiator speaks with the person involved.

Love how the cops escalate a situation all on their own! We go by the book yeah when all u have is a hammer all u see are nails. Hope this turns out peacefully settled in spite of their swat team approach.
how did they escalate this on there own?
They do it by the book because that is the way to get the best outcome. They learn from prior events and train for them. If they didn’t follow the book and something bad came out of it people would be in line waiting to sue the police. The posts would be slamming the cops for doing something wrong, who knows the President might even say the cops were stupid. As to the cops escalating the situation, when the 911 call came in that is what started this. Even before the call what ever actions the people involved did started this. The cops are never right, it will always be overkill, didn’t react fast enough, acted to fast, didn’t take it seriously, went overboard, are trigger happy, etc.
Maybe that’s why Bangor PD can’t find people to fill their open slots, not so good pay, lousy hours, all the Monday morning quarterbacking.
What did he do wrong? Why were the Police there??
He was probably a danger to himself or others and they may have tried to do a well safety check (which is mandatory if there is any indication the person is a threat to themselves or others) and was refused access to do the check.
He had the right to keep and bear arms but not to threaten someone with it.
There are accounts on-line that tell his name and what he did, and what he was charged with. sometimes using more than one source improves knowledge of a subject.
Where on-line did you find the other accounts? I would be interested to find out more….

Thank you! That definitely clears some things up….
Geez, can’t a guy stay holed up in his own home without being dragged out anymore? All this for one man who probably had had enough and just wanted to be left alone.
about 100 big bad law enforcement officers…deputies, tactical team….ALL SCARED WAITING OUTSIDE. LOVE IT.
not knowing whats on the other side of something, I would love to see your big bad self go in blind!
You people are unreal. You blame the police when they shoot and kill someone, and you blame them when the situation ends without deadly force. You are all a bunch of hypocrites!
But McCausland said authorities were handling the situation by the book and typically in situations such as a standoff, only a trained negotiator speaks with the person involved.
The book is not perfect, a bad outcome can still evolve, had a 50/50 chance, should have let the guy in.
