HOLDEN, Maine — A Bangor man was charged after admitting to an officer that he had just eaten what was left of a marijuana cigarette, according to police.

Officer Chris Greeley of the Holden Police Department said that he stopped a car for speeding around 6 p.m. Sunday on Route 1A. Upon approaching the vehicle’s driver, Greeley said he could smell marijuana.

The driver, Michael C. Lipski, 46, of Bangor, reportedly told Greeley that he had just eaten a “roach,” a slang term for the end of a joint.

Greeley said he then asked Lipski to step out of the vehicle so the officer could conduct a search, during which he found a small bag of marijuana.

Lipski was summoned on a charge of possession of a usable amount of marijuana.

  1. Who broke this important news story so quickly? Either the reporter was right there in the car or someone felt compelled to call the media. Some people will do anything for attention I guess.

      1. Cops in general don’t call in often.  Politicians who go part as cops call the BDN frequently. (Greeley)

  2. Good grief!  When are we going to stop spending taxpayer money persecuting herb users for harming no one!?!?!

    End the prohibition!!!

      1. And that contributes to the argument how? You shouldn’t be speeding period.

Legalize weed. Treat it like alcohol. Tax it. Done!

        1. So you are 100% ok with arresting people who drive after they have smoked weed?

He was stopped for speeding, not for smoking weed but for some reason you have missed that important fact.

          1. As a smoker and someone who takes responsibility for their actions, I’m okay with arresting people who operate under the influence of marijuana. I’m going to push for my rights to enjoy the wonderful plant in my own private residence, but on the road? Let’s be reasonable. Not every smoker functions at the same level. I certainly do wish these people would stop giving the responsible smoking community a bad name.

          2.  Well neither did he arrest Mr. Lipski for being under the influence. What’s your point? Mine was an observation that it appears others above missed; that in the judgement of the police officer at the scene that Mr. Lipski was not unfit to drive no matter what word is used to describe his condition.

          3. You’re just looking to debate. I have no further point to make and you clearly missed what I was saying anyways. Let’s both go find something better to do with our time.

          4.  Well yes, I did miss what you were saying, that’s why I asked what your point was. Oh well, I guess “well if you don’t know I’m certainly not going to tell you” is an answer. It’s a really stupid answer, and does nothing to promote understanding but that’s your prerogative if that’s how you want to be.

            Toodles!

          5. He admitted to “eating” the roach.  He was arrested for having a “usable” amount in a bag.  You can’t get high from eating the plant.   You need to raise the temperature to release the THC, as in smoking or baking it into butter or food.  I suppose if he ate a BUNCH of roaches.  There are a couple other ways, but simply eating it will not have any affect.

        2.  The great Zonker Harris (of Doonesbury), busted for possession of weed but freed on a technicality, commented, “It may be right or it may be wrong, but it’s definitely against the law.”

        3. Sure, then he could be taken for driving under the influence. Can the bag be considered an open bottle?

        4. Tax it? The idea of taxing weed, if legal, is silly. Does the government tax the tomatoes growing in back yards.  There is no way they can (or the would). Every pot head in town would have their own grow. Why buy it when you can grow it? Stop the BS.

          1. But they can tax the tobacco you buy in the store even thought it can be grown at home in vast areas of the USA.  Most people are too dumb or lazy to do it themselves.  That’s how it would work.

          2. Uh….. they’ll make it illegal to grow.  Then they will tax and distribute it.  Eventually they will need to make it legal to grow, but not at first.

    1. he is not harming any one? he was speeding.  every day there are 1-3 crashes in the Bangor daily news, drivers speeding

looks like pot  does do brain damage

  3. I thought we decriminalized possession of less than a certain amount in Maine.. am I wrong?

    1. I think this is a case where reader must assume that the driver was charged due to the amount of marijuana found in the search. Typical BDN reporting: misleading and in a class of its own.

  4. Friends dont let friends eat their marijuana! Love officer Greely, great officer. And funny as hell. Marijuana is harmless overall, but I do think that it should best be enjoyed in your residence. Yes, it doesn’t make you a crazy driver, but you should just keep it home for a remedy to relax after the day is done.
Truthfully, I would trade a smoker who drives with any drunken driver any day! Much safer. But it is better to not drive at all in any situation that you might be intoxicated. But I also agree that young adults just use mary for the fun of it, when it is much more of a natural remedy than anything else. In my opinion, it should only be consumed when at home and enjoyed only by adults. That won’t happen of course, but young people think it is just a fun thing to do, when it’s more about a healthy alternative to the pharmacy chemicals that they prescribe like it’s going out of style! Total chemical crap is installed into our bloodstreams every day and it makes the 10 percent of America rich!!

  5. Don’t be a “dope” and use pot in your car…..even though it should be legal to use it…..you. can wait till you get home right?
