PORTLAND, Maine — A junior member of U.S. Sen. Susan Collins’ staff has been fired for sending a tweet about independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.

A spokesman for the Maine Republican says Luke Welch, employed as new media and press assistant, was dismissed Wednesday.

The tweet came from Collins’ official account as senators debated a farm bill. It read: “Good ol’ (at)SenSanders is always entertaining. Not a huge fan. I’ll give him this, the genetically modified food label makes sense.”

The Collins spokesman told The Portland Press Herald that Welch had access to Collins’ account and “accidentally tweeted something that the senator would never say and which does not reflect her views.”

Welch, from his personal Twitter account, said the tweet was “posted in error.”

Sanders’ office had no comment.

    1. Yeah, a genetically modified food label does make sense, but when you’re a politician you have to stick with the time tested adage: if you don’t have anything truthful to say, don’t say anything at all! But I agree, regardless whether or not you’re a socialist or a republican, GMO labels should be on food, especially since at the Monsanto corporation a few years back their own employees forbid the consumption of their own food products and opted instead for only organic non-GMO varieties!

  1. Oh my gosh…I can’t imagine the panic he felt when he realized he had posted from the wrong account.  I have posted from my kid’s facebook account by accident…not a good idea.

  2. Wow! She fired a staffer for a tweet on her account.
